Job Description Summary

Auburn University is seeking candidates for Head of the Department of Horticulture in the College of Agriculture. The successful candidate will provide vision and leadership that upholds the College's tradition of excellence in teaching, research, extension/outreach, and service. The Head will serve as the chief academic and administrative officer for the Department and will report directly to the Dean of the College of Agriculture.

The Department of Horticulture has been recognized nationally for its research programs, Extension programs, student-centered faculty members and high rate of graduate employment. The department consists of 15 tenure-track faculty, 2 non-tenure-track faculty, 12 administrative professionals and support staff, 27 graduate students and 115 undergraduate students.

Responsibilities: The Department Head provides visionary leadership and overall management of the Department. The Head also serves as the senior faculty administrator and promotes excellence in teaching, research and extension/outreach programs. The position demands performance of professional level duties requiring leadership, vision, strategic planning, and decision-making skills in the supervision of departmental programs and personnel. The Head is responsible for recruitment, supervision and evaluation of personnel, department budgets, extramural funding, and professional development of faculty and staff, as well as oversight of the departmental greenhouse facilities that are located on the Auburn University campus. In addition, the Head will also serve as an advocate and representative of the department/college interests, needs and programs through interactions with and fund raising activities. The Head establishes and maintains working relationships with other departments within the university, commodity groups, agribusiness representatives, governmental and private agencies in addition to students and alumni. The successful candidate will maintain a close collaborative working relationship with administrators and staff in the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications: The candidate must have an earned a PhD from an accredited institution in horticulture or related field with an emphasis in horticulture and a distinguished scholarship record sufficient to merit appointment with tenure at the rank of Professor. The successful candidate must demonstrate an understanding of the breadth and depth of the different departmental constituencies. He/she must possess excellent interpersonal communication skills and demonstrate that he/she can communicate effectively with faculty, staff, stakeholders, parents and students. In addition, the incumbent must also demonstrate leadership, organizational skills, and have an understanding of sustainability and value managed growth. The successful candidate must also demonstrate excellence in teaching, research and/or extension/outreach activities. A demonstrated ability to secure and sustain extramural funding, an understanding of funding agencies and leadership/service activities in professional societies is required. Knowledge and commitment to the unique mission of the Land-Grant University is also required. The successful candidate must meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.
