Position Description:

Under the general direction of the Senior Vice President of Administration and Finance, the Director of Internal Audit will provide independent and objective assurance and consulting services to protect, add value and strengthen management and oversight of the university and all affiliated entities (includes Cal Poly State University, Cal Poly Foundation, Cal Poly Corporation and Associated Students Inc.). The Director will conduct periodic risk assessments and will develop and execute an internal audit plan to mitigate risk as appropriate. The Director will ensure campus entities have appropriate internal controls, effective and efficient processes, and good business practices. Working closely with other campus leaders, staff, and faculty, the Director will evaluate the effectiveness of the controls in place in order to manage significant risk exposures, ensure the integrity and reliability of information and financial reporting, safeguard company assets, and support compliance with laws and regulations. The Director of Internal Audit shall report administratively to the Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance and functionally to the President of the university.

  • Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field and 6 years of progressively responsible experience in auditing or a closely related area.


    LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, DEGREES, CREDENTIALS: Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA)


    Required Qualifications:
  • Working knowledge of financial recordkeeping methods, procedures, and practices including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Working knowledge of internal control standards and their application in financial or administrative contexts.
  • Working knowledge of accounting databases for the purposes of data collection, extraction, analysis, and reporting.
  • Knowledge of governmental financial accounting methods and related laws, rules, and regulations, particularly those established by the Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB).
  • Skilled at identifying, compiling, extracting, and analyzing complex financial data and creating clear, coherent financial statements.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply accounting principles to analysis of complex accounting problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide direction and supervise the work of others, including guiding, mentoring, and providing professional development opportunities.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct information security audits
  • Ability to engage in strategic conversations with leaders and others regarding audit findings, recommendations, and action plans and to influence the completion of projects and initiatives.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality in a variety of sensitive settings.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • A Master's Degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft
  • Experience in a university, governmental, or other complex regulatory environment.
  • Experience in the development of university or governmental GAAP reporting packages and/or stand-alone financial statements.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
  • This position is a "designated position" in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.
  • Full-time MPP employees are required to disclose outside employment at time of hire or within 30 days of taking additional outside employment subsequent to time of hire.
  • This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

    Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
