Position Description:
ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF ANIMAL SCIENCE - TENURE TRACK, the Animal Science Department, in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo. Full-time academic year, tenure-track position. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Starting date is negotiable, but on or before January 9, 2017 is preferred.

Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate courses in food animal production and management, and in other areas appropriate to the expertise of the individual and needs of the department. Particular attention will be afforded to candidates who would strengthen current department initiatives in one or more of the following areas: beef cattle production and management, food animal medicine, genomics, rangeland resource management, or animal behavior. Additional responsibilities will include advisement of undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate is expected to develop an applied research program, direct graduate student studies, and demonstrate ability to obtain external funding. In addition, candidate should be able to provide practical experience and individualized student learning opportunities such as enterprise classes, undergraduate research and student internships.

Duties may also include, but are not limited to, supervision of undergraduate senior projects, graduate student research, student advising, and teaching graduate level courses and/or in a Master of Professional Studies or certificate program. The successful candidate is expected to participate in scholarly activities (i.e., research, grant writing, publications, presentations) as part of his/her professional development. Service activities will include participation on department, college, and university committees and instructionally related activities.


Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):


Required Qualifications:
A Doctorate in Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, or a closely related field, is required.

Must demonstrate excellence in teaching, effective communication and interpersonal skills. The ability to be a productive team player and to interact well with peers, students, industry, government agencies, and the general public is essential. Must demonstrate a commitment to diversity.

Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interests in undergraduate and graduate teaching are required. Particular attention will be afforded to candidates who have productive records of teaching and scholarly activity that would strengthen current department initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates with a D.V.M./M.S. or D.V.M./PhD or board certification are preferred.

The Animal Science Department crosses the interdisciplinary boundary of animal production and food processing. Cross-disciplinary research from the farm to the end-consumer product is encouraged. In addition, candidates with private industry experience are preferred. The ability to collaborate on research with faculty across the College and University is desirable.

Candidates who have international experience or the desire to cultivate international links are preferred.
