Position Description:
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DESIGN - The Mechanical Engineering Department within the College of Engineering at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA invites applications for full-time, academic year, tenure-track faculty appointments in the general area of mechanical engineering design, salary commensurate with the applicant's background and experience. Preferred specializations include human centered design, design theory and methodology, creativity in engineering, bio-inspired design, design thinking, engineering education, and machine design. The projected start date is September 13, 2018. An earlier January 8, 2018 start date may be possible upon mutual agreement. Candidates with industry experience are encouraged to apply.

As part of its strategic initiative in human-centered design, the department seeks faculty to develop and lead hands-on learning activities that foster student innovation and creativity.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: (a) teaching both foundational courses that introduce the design process while building students' creative confidence and upper division courses that emphasize machine design or include an industry sponsored senior design project. The selected candidate will also be expected to teach introductory engineering mechanics courses and develop new technical elective and/or graduate level courses within their area(s) of expertise; (b) supervising undergraduate and graduate-level research; (c) developing and maintaining externally-funded research programs in mechanical engineering or engineering education; (d) engaging in activities related to service at all levels of the University. Outcomes assessment and Learn by Doing are important components of the University curriculum. Specific assignments will depend on department and program needs.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):


Required Qualifications:
Academic Preparation: An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in mechanical engineering or a closely related field from an accredited institution or international equivalent is required for appointment. Candidates in their terminal year of an accredited doctoral program will also be considered; the position is contingent on completion of the degree.
Professional Qualifications: Candidates are expected to demonstrate a potential for teaching excellence and scholarly activity with continued professional development in the general area of mechanical engineering design. Cal Poly is committed to the teacher scholar model: Faculty are expected to develop and use robust teaching pedagogy, engage in scholarly activities, and support university efforts through service. An ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, and administration from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds is essential.

* Background in human centered design, design theory and methodology, creativity in engineering, bio-inspired design, design thinking, engineering education, or machine design.
* Knowledge of industry design practices
* Interest in laboratory-based, hands-on instruction
* Interest in promoting diversity
* Willingness to teach in multiple areas of the undergraduate and graduate mechanical engineering curriculum.

Special Conditions:
A background check (including a criminal record check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.
