Job Summary:

The Academic Programs Office (APO) is a unit with a 101 budget of $1.3 million, extramural expenditures of $900,000, and $1.8 million in UW Foundation endowments for graduate fellowships. The office is jointly led by the Nelson Institute Associate Director for Research & Education and the Assistant Director for Administration, to whom this position directly reports. The Nelson Institute APO personnel consists of 20 faculty, 8 staff, and 4 student workers. There are three graduate degree programs, three graduate level certificates, and undergraduate programs (certificate and major) with 800 students across all programs.

This position serves as the primary administrator for the unit and requires the incumbent to take considerable initiative and use independent judgement, operating with delegated authority from the Directors who supervise the office. Responsible for grant administration and management of all other business functions for the Academic Programs Office including administrative policies and procedures, human resources, and payroll; provide administrative support to the Directors to assure smooth operation of activities.

Position requires coordination with other research administrators in the Nelson Institute and with staff in the Institute's administrative services office. Position requires knowledge of federal agencies (e.g., NSF, USDA, USFWS, USGS) and University requirements to effectively manage research grants and to assure accurate and timely submission of proposals and reports to funding agencies. Knowledge of university and state purchasing, accounting, human resources, payroll processes is also a must.

This position requires excellent professional skills, organizational skills, and the ability to interact positively and independently with university administration, faculty, staff, students and the community at large. Mandatory requirements include strong oral and written communications skills, judgment, discretion, prioritization skills, data interpretation and analysis, exacting attention to detail, and the ability to handle a wide variety of tasks simultaneously and effectively.
