Position Summary:

The Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (WVDL) is a high volume laboratory that provides a broad range of veterinary diagnostic testing services to approximately 2,500 clients. The principal objective is to provide animal disease testing services to veterinarians from across the State of Wisconsin and the country.

The WVDL works closely with an array of entities and has allegiances and obligations that include the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA); the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, Division of Animal Health (DATCP); the National Wildlife Health Center (USGS); the Division of Public Health of the Department of Health Services (DHS); the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR); the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH); the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM); the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD); and the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association (WVMA). These alliances provide for cooperation and information transfer as each organization pursues its mission. The WVDL is a National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) Core Laboratory and therefore is a part of our national defense against livestock disease disasters. A significant part of WVDL's work involves surveillance testing for the USDA and DATCP, as well as extensive testing for the national livestock genetics industry, much of which is located in Wisconsin. In addition, testing is performed in support of Wisconsin's fish industry. The WVDL has laboratories located in Madison and in Barron, Wisconsin.
This is a Microbiologist position that will work in a scheduled rotation between Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy (TSE) diagnostics, Immunohistochemistry and Pathology Sciences at the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. This position will involve multiple aspects of veterinary diagnostics including performing sample collection and preparation; testing with TSE ELISA plate assays and performing specialized Immunohistochemistry testing and other test procedures to analyze specimens for the presence of prions and other pathogens.

This Microbiologist position will also work with Pathology Sciences in the preparation and processing of fresh, frozen and preserved tissue specimens for microscopic and gross examination by Pathologists, Veterinary Specialists and other scientists. The work will be conducted in both the general necropsy suite and the higher risk Bio-secure necropsy suite. It includes all aspects of tissue trimming, processing, sectioning, and staining. Tissue specimens may be formalin-fixed or preserved by other means. This is precision work which often involves small and valuable biopsy specimens; thus considerable manual dexterity and care is required. This component includes immunohistochemsitry for other (non-TSE) markers. This position also requires a rotation in Pathology Sciences, where post mortem pathological examinations occur. This is the most physical component of the position and requires the ability to work independently in a fast paced, on-call environment. Work is performed under the supervision of the Microbiologist Supervisor and the direction of the Section Head of Pathology.

Additional Information:

Although this position is terminal, there is possibility for this position to become renewable based on funding and performance.
