Irrigation Specialist, Facilities Services # 2866
California State University Dominguez Hills was established in 1960 and is one of the 23 campuses that comprise The California State University System. CSU Dominguez Hills is an urban, comprehensive public university that serves a culturally rich, diverse student body of approximately 14,000 students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Located on a 346-acre site in the South Bay portion of the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, CSU Dominguez Hills has a highly pluralistic student body, which includes a significant number of non-traditional, working adult students as well as approximately 2,000 students enrolled in distance learning programs statewide. The University, with its five Academic Colleges, has more than 300 full-time faculty members and is situated in an area characterized by an extraordinary heterogeneity of people, and an extensive array of high technology industries and professional services.
Conditions of Employment:
Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.
Candidates must pass a Live Scan (fingerprinting) background check as a requirement of employment.
Employment is contingent upon candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
Position Information:
Full-time, permanent (probationary) position.
Department: Facilities Services
Physical Plant is responsible for the design, construction, upkeep, repair and maintenance of State owned and operated building space and grounds at the University, totaling in excess of 1,088,785 gross square feet of building space, including 346 acres of grounds, 60% in active use. The mission is to provide an aesthetically appealing, well-maintained, safe and comfortable physical environment conducive to learning and work.
Major Job Duties:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge:
Thorough knowledge of the soil conditions of the various areas of the campus; climate of the area in which the campus is located; and the mechanical principles of equipment. General knowledge of the kinds of control devices and irrigation equipment available on the market.
Abilities:
Ability to plan, estimate costs, and install or modify irrigation systems for particular sections of the campus; repair and maintain existing irrigation systems; operate equipment, such as, small trench-diggers; provide lead work direction to others; and read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
Preferred Knowledge & Experience:
Two years experience in maintaining a commercial irrigation infrastructure including; thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance, repair and installation of irrigation pipe lines, remote control valve, in-line isolation valves, low voltage direct burial wiring, surge pump systems, specialized automated control devices, and computerized automated water saving software systems.
Ability to read and interpret landscape irrigation blueprint drawings, plan legends and detailed specifications related to irrigation water supply lines and irrigation systems.
Ability to perform general service and repairs to timing devices, and components of irrigation control panels to insure the automated irrigation of the campus landscape.
Ability to schedule central computerized irrigation systems.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, faculty, students and others. Certificate in irrigation and landscape design.
Certification:
Valid Drivers License.
Specialized Materials: The position activities may require the use of the following equipment, machinery, tools, vehicles or office equipment:
- Central computerized irrigation systems
- Progressive electronic equipment (valve locator, fault finder, wire detector).
- Tractor / skip loader, tractor / trencher, large & small fork lift.
Experience and Education:
Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Education: High School graduation or equivalent. Completed educational or vocational course work relating to the applied mechanical principals of irrigation, irrigation systems equipment and designs is highly desirable.
Experience: Two years' experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or general grounds, with one year of extensive maintenance, repair and modification of irrigation systems and irrigation equipment.
Preferred Experience: Two year experience in the care of maintenance of landscaped in an institutional setting, with one year of extensive maintenance, repair and modification of a commercial or institutional automated irrigation systems.
Salary Range: The salary range for this classification is $2,990 - $4,708 monthly.
