Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Building and Grounds Supervisor (Tree Crew) this position is primarily responsible for routine preventive maintenance and minor repairs to the exterior portions of landscape irrigation systems and their associated controls on the Madison Campus. This includes the care of existing systems as well as future systems. Duties also involve the maintenance and care of green roofs on campus. Green roofs are a growing trend that aid in sustainability efforts by absorbing rainwater, providing insulation, creating a habitat for wildlife, and helping to lower urban air temperatures. Green roofs are a part of the overall sustainability initiative on campus, and sustainability is goal #1 of the Campus Master Plan. As a national leader in sustainability, UW-Madison?s building plans incorporate green roof systems wherever and whenever feasible, and these special structures require focused attention and special knowledge and skills to maintain.

This position also operates all Grounds-related vehicles and power equipment, including end loaders, back hoes, skid steers, and various hand-operated equipment. Work involves heavy manual labor and is performed independently, and occasionally under adverse weather conditions. This position will also direct the work of temporary employees, and carry out experimental work for research using new techniques and materials.

Must possess, or have the ability to obtain within six months or prior to passing probation, a Commercial Driver's License with air brake and tank endorsement(s), which meets the UW Risk Management Standards, and maintain ability to drive State of Wisconsin vehicles.

Based upon the requiring the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License to pass probation, this position requires employees to be able to speak, read, write and understand verbal instructions in English.

Must be available for snow removal and over time as necessary.

Schedule Comment:

7:00 am - 3:30 pm, 30 min unpaid lunch breack. Monday - Friday.
