Physical Requirements Lifting, pushing, and/or pulling objects up to and over 50lbs; Standing or walking with objects up to 25lbs; Repetitive motion; Risk of injuries from use of equipment on the job; Loud noises; Cuts/punctures; Outdoor temperatures and weather extremes.
Shift 7:30am - 4:15pm (Monday - Friday)
Hours of work may vary dependent upon situational and weather-related factors
and may require some night(s), weekend(s), and holiday(s) response.
Job Summary The Irrigation Technician oversees and/or performs technical installation and repairs of underground lawn sprinkler systems on the University campus; Maps systems for campus-wide master plan; Installs new drip and sprinkler systems in collaboration with contractors/vendors; Reviews or recommends changes to contract specifications; Prepares layouts; installs, cuts and joins piping and water delivery components; backflow prevention controls; mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical irrigation controls; and other irrigation system components; Removes old systems and recovers re-usable equipment; Troubleshoots and repairs irrigation components and systems; Instructs others in minor irrigation repairs; Uses hand or power tools or equipment; Operates mowers, tractors and trenchers to install/repair lines; and Coordinates with other departments, project managers, and/or outside contractors. In addition, this position monitors irrigation lines from a computer and ensures all equipment is functioning properly by performing regular testing; Sets and maintains times on computer and electronic valve clocks; troubleshoots computerized electronic systems, irrigation controllers, solenoid valves, and heads of all types; Troubleshoots and resolves problems like overwatering, underground leaking and water shortages; acts quickly and efficiently to mitigate problem(s) as fast as possible; Analyzes historical rainfall data and irrigation water usage to estimate or predict seasonal irrigation needs; Maintains essential metrics regarding irrigation water usage; irrigation management activities; and completed orders for decisive and recordkeeping purposes; and Ensures compliance with University Records Retention Requirements. The Irrigation Technician also performs general groundskeeping and maintenance duties as needed or requested by the Grounds Department Management, and may be assigned to various teams to assist in maintaining an area of land for aesthetic or functional purposes.
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities MS Windows/Office; KRONOS ; Irrigation Information System
Driver's License - Preferred
Knowledge of underground sprinkler system installation and repair; and computerized electronic monitoring systems.
Adept at operating different kinds of heavy machinery such as mowers, tractors, or trenchers.
