Assistant Director Risk Management

Job Title: Assistant Director Risk Management Job Number: 2017-120 Department: Risk Management-23159 Job Description:

Salary: Commensurate with experience and education

Job Summary: The Assistant Director Risk Management is responsible for assisting in the identification and controlling risks and losses in the areas of property, environmental, life safety, workers compensation, general liability and auto liability. Assists in budget planning and coordination of comprehensive risk reduction strategies.

Duties and Essential Job Functions:

Facilitates WC process which includes reporting claims to carriers, obtaining payroll information from HR, counseling injured workers, assisting employees through the process, interacting with the medical provider, assisting the carrier with information, interacting with employees' department, facilitating the return to work and pursuing the closure of claim.

Compiles data for Texas Department of Labor on annual basis. Gathers information for Worker's Compensation and Auto annual audit. Works with HR payroll for reports. Reviews all workers compensation claims quarterly with broker and carrier. Reviews all liability claims semiannually and all open workers compensation claims quarterly.

Develops written programs for safety and environmental issues as needed.

Executes all aspects of the insurance policy renewal process. Completes accident investigations (general liability, auto and WC) and partners with insurance company to achieve claim resolution. Oversees training for First Aid/CPR/AED through the American Red Cross. Oversees Emergency Floor Officer (EFO) program and conducts related training two times per year. Updates current weather and University information via website. Develops evacuation plans for each EFO in case there is an emergency.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • 5 plus years of experience in related field.


Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Higher education experience.


Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:
  • Valid Texas Driver's License


Preferred Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:
  • Basic Spanish speaking.
  • Associate of Risk Management Certification (ARM).


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of worker's compensation claims management and multiple types of risk management programs.
  • Knowledge of customer service techniques.
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal laws or regulations required to perform the job.
  • Knowledge of insurance policies.
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques with the ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Skill in presenting information to various levels of the organization.
  • Skill in Microsoft Windows, specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate information both verbally and in writing.


Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):
  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
  • Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
  • Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 10 lbs.


Work Environment:
  • Work is indoors, outdoors and requires movement across entire campus.

  • The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
