Position/Job Summary

Provide portable equipment and technology needs for the production of audio, still image, and moving image content by students and faculty of the Roy H. Park School of Communications. Establish and direct procedures to operate and maintain the equipment of the Park Portable Equipment Center and Services and the PPECS Pro checkout centers ( PPECS ). Assist in the creation of, and have responsibility for, the adherence to policies and procedures that govern the operation of PPECS . Primary responsibility for diagnostics, repair, and as necessary, the referral for outside repair, to keep all equipment up to factory specification for performance and safety. Maintain records of repairs and inventory, and perform periodic statistical usage analysis of the equipment provided through PPECS . Train and work with the student staff of PPECS to insure that the services provided meet or exceed the needs of the educational programs of the school. Educate student PPECS staff on the proper operation of all equipment. The ability to lead technical workshops with students and faculty will also be an important role.

Position/Job Responsibilities

1. Perform ongoing research into emerging technologies and practices of on-location production of digital audio recording, still image and moving image acquisition across the various disciplines in the Roy H. Park School of Communications. Included, is the maintenance of relationships with the educational personnel and programs of the major manufacturers.

2. Assist students and faculty with the various production tasks as related to specific equipment and processes. Act as liaison between faculty/staff and communications manufacturers/service providers.

3. Inspect, test, evaluate, distribute, recall, repair and schedule for repair all portable equipment available through PPECS to include general electrical repair of tungsten lighting equipment and associated tools, and portable power for cameras and recorders; mechanical repair of lighting fixtures, camera supports, grip equipment, camera mounts and camera or lens accessories; and light electronics repair limited to performance evaluation and diagnostics, audio cable fabrication, general mechanical repair of cameras and audio recorders. Arrange for more advanced repairs delegated to the Technical Operations Shop, or outside repair.

4. Maintain an inventory of parts and accessories to ensure equipment is never "checked-out" performing below factory specification or without its associated accessories. Inspect and clean lenses and other optical devices, perform simple mechanical repairs, or send out for repair.

5. Oversee and maintain inventory records and provide statistical analyses as directed, in order to participate in resource purchase and allocation, and ensure the quality and availability of equipment meets the needs of the educational programs of the School.

6. Ensure the safety of all equipment available through PPECS through effective inspection processes and mandatory policies. Communicate policies to student staff and the School at large.

7. Provide technical instruction, direction and guidance to PPECS student staff in the care and use of all equipment and processes necessary, so that students can effectively "check-out" and "check-in" all equipment, and ensure that such equipment is accounted for and in excellent condition.

8. Develop and demonstrate a multicultural awareness and contribute to cultivating an inclusive, diverse and respectful College community. Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students and visitors to the College. Promote a flexible, collaborative and inclusive work and living environment and engage in educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.

9. Assist in the recruitment, training and supervision of the PPECS student staff.

10. Provide backup assistance to the Manager of Facilities and Portable Equipment as required.

Position/Job Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in communications or a related field and extensive experience with the traditional and digital tools and processes of on-location media production or the equivalent combination of education and experience; strong attention to detail, organizational, interpersonal, and communications skills, and the ability to effectively work and interact respectfully within a diverse and inclusive environment; ability to train, manage and interact with Park School students who work in PPECS ; adept at working with relational databases, scheduling and spreadsheet software; ability to test, evaluate and repair equipment; and skill with the hand tools of mechanical and electrical repairs are required. Aptitude in electronics repairs or the machining of metal parts and components are preferred.
