Salary Range: $3,134 - $5,088 per month. (Anticipated hiring range: $3,134 - $3,448 per month.) This position is paid under the 11/12 pay plan, where salary for 11 months is distributed over 12 months with JULY off (with pay, benefits, and vacation/sick leave accrual continuing through months off).

Position Description:

The College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED) is comprised of five inter-related undergraduate disciplines (Architectural Engineering, Architecture, City & Regional Planning, Construction Management and Landscape Architecture) and three graduate programs (Architectural Engineering, Architecture and City & Regional Planning). Currently, there are approximately 100 faculty, 30 staff and 1,900 students in the CAED. All of these disciplines use the college's instructional shops, labs and construction sites in their academic programs. The hands-on instructional opportunities supported by these facilities are essential to the college's academic mission.

Under the general supervision of the Instructional Shops Manager, this position assembles, installs and performs skilled repair and maintenance of equipment for the CAED Support Shop, classrooms, digital fabrication lab, and instructional facilities using standard equipment repair knowledge, skills, tools, methods and techniques. Assignments may include other duties related to instructional support. The Equipment Technician I position requires knowledge of wood working, metal working, and computer driven equipment. This position will occasionally make simple modifications to equipment. Troubleshooting involves standard practices for skilled technicians.

The following examples of typical work activities are meant to illustrate the general range of work functions performed by the Equipment Technician; they are not meant to be an all-inclusive or restrictive.



Classroom and Research Laboratory Support

  • Ensure proper safety policies are followed in the shops, labs and instructional facilities.

  • Give technical advice, train and oversee faculty, staff and students to safely use equipment and instruments.

  • Diagnose and perform skilled repair and maintenance of common and specialized equipment to the component level. Research, acquire, assemble and install equipment and replacement components. Find cost effective alternatives to original equipment manufactured parts.

  • Perform calibration and quality control tests to ensure reliability, repeatability, and safety.

  • Troubleshoot and repair problems with equipment and instruments.

  • Provide recommendations for changes in shop operations to ensure goals of programs are met including efficient utilization of facilities and their services, equipment upgrades, and software updates that incorporate recent advances in industrial standards.

  • Establish preventative maintenance schedules and define technical skills required to service industrial equipment.

  • Collaborate with facility services and off campus vendors for maintenance projects. Inspect and verify completed work.

  • Prepare installation sites for student or faculty construction projects.

  • Maintain an inventoried stock of replacement equipment and consumables.

  • Archive and preserve equipment inventory records, maintenance files, operation and repair manuals, and department specific software.

  • Train and supervise student assistants.


  • Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: One year of journey-level experience in the maintenance, repair and operation of mechanical equipment or closely related experience which demonstrates skill in the construction, repair, and fabrication of similar equipment. (One year of semi-skilled experience in maintenance and repair of wood working and metal working equipment or related equipment experiences as part of instructional support activities, or one year of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in mechanical equipment repair, or completion of apprenticeship program, or completion of full military specialization in mechanical equipment maintenance and repair may be substituted for the required experience).

    LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, DEGREES, CREDENTIALS: Possess or have the ability to obtain, by date of hiring, a valid driver's license.


    Required Qualifications:
  • Ability to safely use a variety of tools including, mills, lathes, saws, torches, welders, drills, bending brake and sheer equipment, sanders/grinders, power and non-powered hand tools.
  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to an emergency situation.
  • Ability to determine when and how to apply safety precautions while repairing bio-hazardous or chemical contaminated equipment.
  • General knowledge of installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of wood working, metal working, and computer driven equipment in order to develop maintenance schedules and operating manuals.
  • Knowledge in the use, repair and maintenance of tools, shop and laboratory equipment.
  • General knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in construction.
  • Ability to analyze equipment problems and determine what repairs are needed; ability to perform quality control tests and calibrate to ensure functionality, accuracy, and precision.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply independent judgment, discretion, and initiative to address problems and develop practical, thorough, and creative solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize and produce quality work in a busy environment with overlapping deadlines and frequent interruptions with ability to modify work priorities to accommodate unexpected change.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, initiate and complete tasks of a simple to complex scope with limited supervision.
  • Ability to quickly learn, interpret, apply, and communicate a variety of policies and procedures.
  • Ability to adapt to changes and learn new policies, procedures, and technology as needed to complete tasks and ability to receive directions/instructions from many sources.
  • Ability to perform standard arithmetic functions, including tracking and comparing data, along with knowledge and skills to perform higher level calculations related to duties.
  • Ability to follow graphic and written technical documents.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to keep inventory records.
  • Ability to use various computer applications to communicate to others, acquire information, maintain data, and purchase equipment, parts and materials.
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to use CNC tooling.
  • Competency in the use of CAD/CAM and digital modelling design software.
  • ?Advanced understanding of engineering and/or architectural materials, methods of construction, and material applications in building assemblies.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

  • Must be able to safely lift, carry, and move heavy, awkward, or unwieldy equipment, with and without moving aids.
  • Must be able to operate department vehicles to acquire materials from local vendors as needed.
  • Must be able to respond to department emergencies and crises on and off normal work hours as needed.
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs.
  • This position classification has been defined as non-exempt and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
  • This position is paid under the 11/12 pay plan, where salary for 11 months is distributed over 12 months with JULY off (with pay, benefits, and vacation/sick leave accrual continuing through months off).
