Communications Specialist

Job Description:

  • Act as project manager for a wide variety of projects, such as brochures, flyers, postcards, posters, websites, and social media content, working to stay within schedule and budget parameters.
  • Write and/or edit copy for a wide variety of communication projects, following the University's editorial branding standards. This includes social media posts and emails.
  • Work in partnership with graphic designers and/or web designers and developers to implement the conceptual, design, and online processes relating to individual assigned communication projects.
  • Develop marketing strategies to meet client objectives.
  • Arrange for freelance services (writers, editors, designers, photographers, printers, web developers, mailers, etc.) as necessary.
  • Serve as a contributing writer (interview, edit, and write in-depth stories) for the University's institutional magazine, Response.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in writing, journalism, English, communication, public relations, marketing, or related field.
  • At least three years of experience working in a publishing and/or marketing environment, with specific experience in writing, editing, and project management.
  • This position requires outstanding writing and editing skills.
  • The applicant should have a portfolio of published writing pieces and a demonstrated familiarity with the major editorial style guides, most importantly The Associated Press Stylebook.
  • The applicant should be able to show samples of completed marketing projects, both print and web.
  • Knowledge of the graphic design field is desirable, but actual production skills are not mandatory.
  • The ability to coordinate several jobs simultaneously and meet deadlines is essential, as is the ability to work within a team setting, an affinity for accuracy and detail, and a commitment to SPU's vision and the ability to articulate it.
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel), WordPress, HubSpot, and online project tracking software (Basecamp, Wiki, GatherContent).
  • Must possess multicultural competency.
