Supervisor Electronics Lab Operations, Electrical & Computer Engineering

PAY GRADE: 30E

CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under general administrative direction of the Business Administrator, the incumbent manages electronics and maker space teaching laboratories, including the Innovation Suite (iSuite). Performs highly skilled, complex technical work on major electronic equipment and complex instrumentation. Collaborates with the Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies to ensure projects are planned and managed. Oversees the development and design of new initiatives that add to students' educational components including: laboratory experiments, design projects, and beyond the classroom learning. The principal emphasis is on managing educational laboratories and design projects, as well as the engineering, designing, constructing, installing, maintaining and/or modifying of precision research instruments and related apparatus.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Oversees and maintains the integrity and operation of equipment in the undergraduate teaching labs and the Innovation Suite (iSuite). Facilities include electronics, power, and maker space laboratories .
  • Consults with outside design/engineering/software contractors to perform engineering, design, construction maintenance or modifications to precision instruments; maintains current awareness of technological advances.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs & assists in the design, development and operation of highly specialized electronic laboratory equipment & instrumentation; determines problem; purchases and installs parts and tests equipment for proper operation.
  • Supervises and coordinates manufacturer service technicians during repair and maintenance procedures.
  • Performs precision electronic operations on computer-assisted electronic and conventional tools and measuring devices.
  • Participates in the evaluation and selection of equipment. Plans, directs and organizes the installation and qualification of equipment. Maintains inventory and orders parts to support uninterrupted operation of the shop and the needs of the department.
  • Assists faculty and Lab Coordinator with the development and enforcing of safety and operational protocols.
  • Orients students, faculty & staff in the use of this equipment as necessary.
  • Provides leadership and management for the undergraduate teaching labs including the iSuite to promote engagement and retention of students.
  • Oversees students with laboratory and design projects, including design support and component ordering.
  • Educates and instructs students on the safe use of equipment.
  • Establishes, implements and monitors safety standards in the use of equipment and other materials.
  • Maintains iSuite and associated labs including maintenance of test and measurement equipment, 3D printers, basic machining equipment, etc.
  • Collaborates closely with faculty to establish the project scope and to monitor quality standards.
  • Supervises, plans and schedules work to meet deadlines.
  • Prepares and maintains files of as-built schematics and/or drawings.
  • Solders or uses other forms of bonding to join materials.
  • Serves as liaison with other units and electronic manufacturers for specialized services.
  • Prepares necessary records to ensure proper distribution of shop and project costs.
  • Manages loading dock and assists with deliveries/shipments as necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field with at least four years' related experience, or equivalent combination of education & experience in electronics and supervision.
  • Extensive knowledge of research and test instrumentation,computer architecture, and an ability to learn various instrumentation software applications;
  • Training and experience in electronic circuit design and fabrication; knowledge of digital electronic interfacing; familiar with maker space equipment & environment
  • Knowledge of software design and National Electrical Code preferred. Demonstrated analytical, written and verbal communication skills; ability to interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience with specifying, purchasing, installing, and qualifying a wide range of equipment.
  • Self-starter, with a great deal of resourcefulness; ability to manage time effectively and to work independently of others.
  • High energy, self-motivated with strong communication skills and personal work ethic, and a strong sense of ownership.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret policies, procedures and data to make independent decisions and judgments in keeping with the position level.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to visually color code wire, size conduit and troubleshoot related problems.
  • Required to attend annual laboratory safety training and to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.
