Depending on Qualifications

Degree and area of specialization:

Bachelor's degree in Machine Tool Technology, Industrial Arts, Industrial Technology, or similar field required.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Three or more years of supervisory experience in a machine shop or similar experience preferred. Three or more years of experience working with all standard machining operations is essential. Familiarity with fabricated parts costs estimation is preferred. Solidworks experience is a plus.

Position Summary:

This position works closely with researchers, engineers and other principal investigators to provide expert technical advice on experimental design, methodology and appropriate technology. Working with the PSL Shop Committee, this position plays a key role in estimating costs of projects contracted by the Physical Sciences Laboratory (PSL) Mechanical Shop. This position also coordinates all aspects of the day-to-day and long term management of the PSL Instrument Shop.

The Physical Sciences Laboratory (PSL) supports the research initiatives of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and outside international and domestic research institutions by providing technical consultation, engineering design and construction services to researchers in need of specialized instrumentation to conduct their research.
