Climbing Wall Attendant

Job Title: Climbing Wall Attendant Job Number: 2017-081 Department: Campus Recreation - 27370 Job Description:
FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Salary: $8.25 per hour

Job Summary: The Climbing Wall Attendant serves a vital role in day-to-day operations of the entire Outdoor Program. Climbing Wall Attendants supervise the daily activities at the climbing wall to provide a safe and friendly climbing environment for patrons to enjoy the benefits of indoor rock climbing.

Duties and Essential Job Functions:

Enforces all climbing wall policies and procedures. Inspects visually the equipment and facility during opening and closing of wall and report any problems immediately to the climbing wall supervisor. Completes regularly scheduled rope checks. Provides supervision of climbing wall participants to include belaying and spotting climbers. Attends all Outdoor Program staff meetings and trainings with a positive attitude and be prepared to share knowledge and give feedback. Serves on one Climbing Competition Planning Committee.

Handles all injuries, accidents, and emergency situations in accordance with Campus Recreation policy. Provides climbing instructions following established curriculum for the following classes (upon documented completion of proper training): Beginner Climber (Climbing 101), Belay Technique, and Lead Climbing.

Provides assistance to climbers by: determining the eligibility of individuals to use the climbing wall, teaching/demonstrating proper use of climbing equipment (harnesses, belay devices, shows, etc.), maintaining accurate and current records of attendance, equipment inventory, and a list of those certified to belay, and accurately completes all forms and checklists.

Maintains an organized and neat work area. Helps promote awareness of Outdoor Programs by assisting with on-campus marketing opportunities. Checks daily with climbing wall supervisors and staff notes for duties and tasks. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Required Education and Experience:
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.


Preferred Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:
  • Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) certification from a recognized agency such as the Professional Climbing Instructors Association (PCIA) or the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA).


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of basic customer service techniques.
  • Knowledge of indoor rock climbing including climbing technique, belaying technique, routes and ratings systems, rock climbing safety equipment.
  • Knowledge of Campus Recreation programs and activities.
  • Skill in effective written and verbal communications.
  • Ability to work at heights of up to 30 feet.


Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):
  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
  • Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling, sitting, and working in high or precarious places.
  • Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 50 lbs.


Work Environment:
  • Work is indoors and not sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
  • There are no harmful environmental conditions present for this job.
  • The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
