Intellectual Property Officer



The Massachusetts Institute of Technology invites applications for an Intellectual Property Officer working in the dynamic environment of the Technology Licensing Office (TLO). In this position, embodying a unique overlap of technology, business, and law, you will come to know well some of the world's brightest scientists and engineers. Working closely with TLO colleagues you will lead the strategic management of MIT's vast patent portfolio. With ~2,600 issued and ~1,500 pending US patents and over 350 new US patent applications annually, this role will work closely with licensing colleagues to ensure the appropriate protection of MIT's intellectual assets.
You will work at the heart of Kendall Square, to assist colleagues who disseminate MIT technology to companies small and large through licensing and collaborative research agreements. Responsibilities include being the relationship manager with patent law firms hired to prosecute MIT's patents. You must be able to work closely with Inventors and Technology Licensing Officers working in a wide range of technology areas to provide guidance on prosecution strategy. You will be responsible for managing three administrative staff. This position will play a key leadership role in developing and implementing strategies for improving the quality and value of MIT's IP assets.

Job Requirements

Responsibilities include serving as relationship manager with patent law firms hired to prosecute MIT's patents; work closely with Inventors and technology licensing officers working in a wide range of technology areas to provide guidance on prosecution strategy; manage three administrative staff members; and play a key intellectual property assets. REQUIRED: B.S. in science or engineering (law degree, MSc, or Ph.D. preferred); registered USPTO (U.S. Patent and Trademark Office) patent agent; extensive, thorough, up-to-date knowledge of patenting processes, rules, procedures, and practices surrounding U.S. and foreign patent prosecution; significant experience managing docketing, billing, budgets, etc., as part of a legal operation; excellent verbal and written communications skills; strong interpersonal skills that reflect diplomacy and a collaborative approach to developing and maintaining effective working relationships; and experience managing a team of people and successfully leading and implementing change in a vibrant working environment. The ideal candidate will have a broad range of patent-related experience, including significant experience in invention evaluation; strategic patent portfolio management; and drafting, filing and prosecuting patent applications.
