Job Summary:

As a senior Instrument Maker, this position is assigned the most exacting and complex projects coming into the College of Engineering Shops for completion. The responsibility of this position is to design, develop, fabricate, assemble and test these most demanding projects. Many of these projects are prototypical and on the forefront of cutting edge research being done here at the University of Wisconsin from the various precision and research laboratories throughout the U.W. Campus. Some of the projects have been brought in by other machine shops because of their complexity. The projects are as diverse as "Phantoms" for the Bio Medical Department, UHV research and development projects along with all types of specialized tool and die work. This position also acts as a consultant to university engineers, researchers and representatives of industry to provide technical solutions for machining strategies and material selection. This position will also be in charge of instructing all of the CoE Staff in advanced welding techniques and multi axis (3-5) axis CNC operation. Assist the Shop Supervisor in the CoE mandated formalized technical machine tool instructional program. This will include the development of educational materials (in-house/video/on-line) and the presentation of these materials on an individual and formalized class basis. This multi-media machine based program is very specialized and is thought to be the only one of its kind in the country currently in use today. This position will also provide administrative support for both the Instrument and Student Shop as needed, along with technical support to CoE customers on location as needed.

Requirements:

Journey level tool room machinist certification in the machine tool trade or equivalent status which should also include formal classroom training in manufacturing technology and five years of progressively responsible experience in an academic research and development environment, including experience in advising and instructing individual students in support of college research.

Expert level knowledge and skill to produce UHV welds, machining, cleaning and assembly. Welding with the use of GWAM, GTAW, Manual Shielded Arc Welding, brazing and soldering, and Plasma/Carbon Arc/flame cutting.
