Northern Illinois Food Bank provides nutritious food to all those in need through our own efforts and those of our nearly 800 partner agencies in the following 13 counties - Boone, DuPage, DeKalb, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, Ogle, Stephenson, Will and Winnebago. The Food Bank acquires, gathers, handles, and distributes approximately three million pounds of donated, government, and purchased food each month through local food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, youth activity centers and other food assistance sites. 


JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/Objective
Support the operations of the South Suburban Center through interaction with staff, volunteers and agency partners (customers) by managing key functions of the volunteer programs and food production.  Responsibilities will include identifying solutions to increase volunteer efficiency in production quantity and accuracy, as well as increasing the quantity of food distributed to agencies through inventory availability and selection. This position will also support any of the center’s operations, including accepting deliveries, serving agencies, processing orders, and so forth. As such, this person must become familiar with most of the center’s operations and be able to lead operations at the Food Bank’s main facility, and others.

Essential Functions

  1. Participate in any needed volunteer shifts - including some evenings and weekends. Supervise volunteer tasks including: training, scheduling and enforcing food and safety standards, recruiting and training volunteer leaders and skills based volunteers.
  2. Collaborate with Center and Operations’ staff to coordinate volunteer projects.
  3. Labor tracking and cost management over Center
  4. Update and tailor the orientation presentation to reflect the work that volunteers will do.
  5. Collaborate with the Volunteer Team at main office to increase volunteer numbers and retention, and plan and execute volunteer appreciation events.
  6. Customize production projects based on inventory and agency needs, and initiate contact with agencies on an as need bases to promote “Hot List” items.
  7. Assist Food Bank Agencies that come to the branch with getting and/or loading their orders, shopping for available products, posting their orders, receiving payments for orders, and forwarding paperwork to appropriate departments at main facility.
  8. Support all Food Bank programs as needed including, if required, deliveries of programs’ orders and pickups of food drives.
  9. Operate a forklift to move product, and load and/or unload Food Bank vehicles when needed.
  10. Help maintain the facility’s health and sanitation standards.
  11. Help support the Center’s and Operation’s Department production schedule by meeting both output quotas and quality standards.
  12. Other duties as assigned.

 

Skills, Education, & Experience

·       Proficient at a Basic level for Microsoft OUTLOOK, WORD and EXCEL.
·       Strong Organizational skills with people, products, and projects.
-       Previous supervisory experience.
·       Warehouse experience desirable.
·       Must have good presentation skills
·       Must be a self-starter and take initiative in providing excellent customer service
·       Must have good oral and written communication skills.
·       Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
·       High school diploma or GED.
·       Certifiable on forklift.

 

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office and warehouse environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines as well as warehouse equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This is a role requiring 50% on their feet. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary, moving cases of food, and may require use of a forklift.
