Under the general direction of the University Controller, the Student Financial Services Director performs a wide-range of technical functions in support of the operations of Student Financial Services (SFS) and its role in receiving and disbursing University funds and recording financial transactions. SFS is responsible for charging, collection, receipt, and reporting of all student fees in accordance with State, CSU, and University policies. SFS includes the operations of the Student Accounts Office and the University Cashiers Office and the operation of the associated administrative systems. In addition to responsibility for student fees, SFS is responsible for ensuring the proper receipting and safeguarding of payments and deposits made to the University, administration of payroll and student refund disbursements, and accounting for student's financial activities in accordance with Federal, State, CSU, and University policies. As part of the Fiscal Services department, SFS plays an integral role within the University's finance group, as well as in many of the accounting functions. Because of this relationship, SFS is responsible for providing critical University accounting information for use in other finance areas and must also interact and perform duties with other finance areas in order to gather accounting information, perform reconciliations, and resolve problems.

The Student Account Office staff is required to have significant depth and breadth of knowledge not only within their areas of expertise but also within the overall activities and operation of Student Financial Services. This cross-functional knowledge is required due to the intricate and inter-related nature of all Student Financial Services processes and is necessary in order to provide accurate and proper administration of the payments and accounts and to enable the staff to effectively communicate information about complex account activity to student, parents, and other staff.

  • Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
    Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business, or related field and six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in accounting or closely related area with demonstrated success in the supervision and first line management.


    Required Qualifications:
  • Experience with working with complex ERP systems and the ability to understand both functional and technical requirements related to the system aspects of the position.
  • Working knowledge of accounting and internal control principles and practices, especially as related to public universities.
  • Ability to quickly learn CSU policies and procedures
  • Ability to research and work with tax laws as they relate to the responsibilities of this position.
  • Demonstrated management, leadership, and customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Expertise in investigating and analyzing problems from a broad and interactive perspective; and using appreciable ingenuity and innovation to conceive of new approaches and strategic solutions to address complex problems and issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to use appreciable judgement to interpret, apply, and develop policies and procedures.
  • Strong ability to interpret, apply, work with, and explain to others a variety of complex academic policies and procedures (including pertinent laws and regulations) and understanding the underlying intent when processing exceptions and/or requesting exceptions to be reviewed/approved; and perform data management transaction with accuracy and efficiency, sound judgement, and professional integrity.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
  • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and/or Master's Degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
  • Experience tracking customer service data metrics and using the data to continuously improve business operations.
  • Strong understanding of Federal and State rules and regulations as they relate to higher education.
  • Previous work experience managing and safeguarding financial aid funds, including analysis and reconciliation.

  • Must will willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • This person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
  • This position is a "designated position" in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.
  • Full-time MPP employees are required to disclose outside employment at time of hire or within 30 days of taking additional outside employment subsequent to time of hire.
  • This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

    Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
