Degree and area of specialization:

Bachelor's degree in Administration, Business Management, Human Resources Management, or similar field of study is preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience required. A strong candidate will demonstrate high-level organizational and critical thinking skills and be able to demonstrate a record of superior task management, as well as the ability to work independently while maintaining confidentiality of discussions.

Supervisory experience and experience in budget and financial management, human resources, purchasing, personnel, payroll, and fringe benefits policies and procedures is preferred.

Successful candidate will also be experienced in the use of computerized software programs, such as MS Office Suite, WISDM, and human resources and payroll systems, such as HRS, JEMS, CHRIS, PVL, TREMS, and have a thorough knowledge of University operating procedures.

Position Summary:

The Arboretum Office Administrator provides a wide range of business management support to the Arboretum, a center within the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education (OVCRGE). Founded in 1934, the Arboretum serves as a research and teaching center that provides natural restored areas, classic horticultural areas, and a variety of ecosystems for use by campus students and educators alike. The Arboretum is the site of the first successful prairie restoration and serves a worldwide community of scholars, researchers, and practitioners engaged in restoration, research, and education.

The mission of the Arboretum is to conserve and restore Arboretum lands, advance restoration ecology, and foster the land ethic. The successful candidate will provide financial and business administration structure for the Arboretum in support of this mission.

The Arboretum has a budget of approximately $2.1 million that includes funding sources in 101, 133, 136, 144, and 161 accounts in addition to a large portfolio of endowment accounts held at the UW Foundation. There are approximately 22 FTEs in the unit that include university staff, academic staff, temporary employees (TEs), student hourly workers, graduate students, and volunteers. The Arboretum Office Administrator reports to the Assistant Director of the Arboretum and provides a combination of advice and procedural information to the Director and the Assistant Director on issues of budget development and management, human resources management, payroll and benefits, and general administrative activities within the unit. This position supervises a staff of two.

The successful candidate will exercise delegated authority with individual initiative and independent judgment in all aspects of the business office and will work as a team with the Director and Assistant Director on center-specific budget and fiscal management tasks.
