Employment Opportunity

The currently advertised full-time Financial Aid Advisor position, provides outreach for the College's financial aid program, and resolves complex financial aid issues.

In addition, a Financial Aid Advisor position eligibility pool may be established in order to fill other full-time, part-time, or substitute assignments.

Examples of Duties

  • Conducts workshops for potential students and their parents and school counselors to explain policies and procedures
  • Meets with students on a one-on-one basis to provide such financial aid information
  • Prepares, edits and updates brochures and other information related to financial aid programs
  • Resolves difficult student financial aid problems by meeting with students and others as appropriate, obtaining additional information and exploring alternative sources of aid
  • Provides instruction and technical direction to office staff
  • Reviews, analyzes and processes student applications for various types of financial aid and/or similar benefits in accordance with state, federal and College guidelines
  • Explains the benefits and requirements of various programs to students
  • Assists students in completing applications and other materials
  • Certifies students' eligibility for particular programs
  • Enters student information into the computer processing system
  • Monitors ongoing status of students receiving aid
  • Prepares correspondence, reports and other written materials
  • Attends informational workshops, conferences and meetings to gather and disseminate information
  • Maintains accurate records and files
  • May act as the Director of Financial Aid on a relief basis
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned


Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Equivalent to completion of two years of college with major coursework in a field related to the work and three years of increasingly responsible experience involving financial aid, or public contact in student services or a college setting.

Please note: Additional experience as outlined above may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis and possession of a four-year degree may reduce the work experience requirement to one year.

Desirable:

  • Experience in reviewing and processing student financial aid applications.

Knowledge of:

  • Techniques for dealing with individuals from diverse academic, ethnic, socioeconomic and cultural background
  • Federal and state laws and College rules and regulations relating to financial aid for students
  • Business data processing principles and the data base model used for financial aid applications
  • Record keeping principles and procedures
  • Standard office practices and procedures
  • Business mathematics
  • Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • Basic supervisory principles and practices
Ability to:
  • Resolve financial aid problems in a creative manner
  • Interpret, explain and apply complex rules and procedures
  • Analyze and evaluate alternatives, recommend solutions, and assist students to obtain the full awards available
  • Demonstrate understanding and sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, gender, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, disability and sexual orientation of community college students and the community
  • Organize and prioritize work
  • Instruct others in work procedures
  • Interview students and obtain required information
  • Prepare clear and concise informational materials and correspondence
  • Use initiative and sound judgment within established procedural guidelines
  • Maintain accurate records and files
  • Maintain confidentiality of information
  • Make accurate mathematic calculations
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work
  • Type with sufficient speed and accuracy to enter data into a computer data base
Other Requirements
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California driver's license and a safe driving record during the course of employment or be otherwise able to get to meetings away from the worksite
  • Must be willing to attend off-hours and off-campus meetings


Additional Information

Current Salary: *3,916 to $4,318 per month to start; seven step schedule to $5,249 per month. Full-time assignment, 12 months per year. 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., with evenings and weekends as required. Classified employees are required to join the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) and as such contribute up to 7% of their monthly salary to CalPERS on a pre-tax basis. Position scheduled to begin as soon as possible, pending continued funding and Governing Board ratification. Salary is subject to proration based on beginning date of assignment.

*Cabrillo College reserves the right at its discretion to hire classified employees at a higher starting step placement, up to step three, in acknowledgement of an individual's previous job-related experience or factors as may be determined upon submission of appropriate written documentation.

Cabrillo College currently provides a benefit stipend contribution for medical, dental, life and long-term disability insurance for employees and eligible dependents.

Each employee hired into a classified position shall contribute to membership dues or service fee or charitable contribution at the current rate of gross salary per month.
