OVERVIEW:
Under the direction of an administrator, prepares and cooks daily meals, following all established policies, procedures and standards of quality for the presentation of healthy, appetizing foods. Performs catering duties as required; maintains a clean and orderly facility; operates and delivers foods to satellite locations; operates cash register. May be required to work early morning, afternoon and/or evening shifts.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is the journey level class in the Food Service Assistant series. Positions in this class perform the full range of duties under general supervision, and may be assigned specialized or more complex assignments requiring advanced skill. All positions assigned to the class work independently, exercising judgment and initiative within general guidelines in performing the full range of duties assigned to this classification.



Representative Duties:

The duties recorded below are representative of the duties of the class and are not intended to cover all the duties performed by incumbent(s) of any particular position. The essential duties of the class are indicated with an asterisk *.

  1. Prepares and cooks daily all menu items, including breads and desserts*
  2. Prepares, sets up and maintains salad bars, soup and potato bars, sandwich displays, etc.*
  3. May operate satellite facility with limited supervision of Auxiliary Services Director*
  4. Prepares and cooks for special catered functions; prepares grab n go meals as needed for daily operation*
  5. Prepares and delivers foods to various campus locations; operates snack bars and vending carts at various locations as required*
  6. Operates meat slicers, ovens, stoves, grills, beverage fountains, and other kitchen appliances, and utilizes various kitchen utensils, performs routine cleaning, following all established safety procedures*
  7. Maintains clean and orderly kitchen and serving areas; clears and cleans dining tables; washes utensils used; removes trash and operates trash compactor*
  8. Performs cashier duties. May prepares daily deposits*
  9. Provides leadership and work direction to Food Service Assistant I's and student workers as required*
  10. Monitors inventory of stock and helps order supplies in area of responsibility; receives and stocks food items and supplies*
  11. Operates a computer to perform basic data entry, access email and District announcements, etc.*
  12. May assist the Food Service Manager in training new employees
  13. May serve on a variety of District committees as requested
  14. May perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position


Qualifications/Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduation from high school, G.E.D. or the equivalent*; AND
  • Two (2) years of experience closely related to the duties and responsibilities of this class.
*High School education equivalency equals an adult education diploma or four (4) years of full-time, paid work experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Hold and maintain a valid driver's license throughout duration of employment with the District.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Three (3) years of directly related work experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
(May be acquired through education, training and/or experience.)

Knowledge of: District policies, procedures and regulations; kitchen sanitation and applicable safety precautions in performing food service work; the appropriate care and use of standard cafeteria appliances; Type A meal planning; basic computer usage for accessing email and utilizing software.
Ability to: learn, understand and implement the required rules, regulations, policies and procedures of the District and department; prepare and cook foods served in large quantities; present attractive and properly proportioned foods; apply kitchen sanitation and safety precautions; compute food quantities required by menus; understand and carry out oral and written directions; maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work; provide friendly and professional customer service; provide effective leadership and demonstrate work activities to Food Service Assistant I's and student employees; work as a team member; operate a computer to perform position functions; utilize keyboarding skills commensurate with the required functions for this position; demonstrate clear evidence of and sensitivity to, the understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students; read and write at the level necessary for successful job performance.



Supplemental Information:

WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No assigned permanent staff to supervise. Provides leadership and work direction to Food Service Assistant I's and student employees.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Subject to frequent lifting of low weight (5 to 25 lbs) such as boxes, various inventory items and stacks of china; occasional lifting of moderate weight objects (26 to 50 lbs).

CONTACTS:
Faculty, staff, administrators, students and the general public.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Noise from kitchen equipment; frequent movement of low weight objects; occasional movement of moderate to heavy objects; extended periods of time spent standing or walking; exposure to strong and/or toxic cleaning agents; extreme heat and dangerous utensils/equipment.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
  1. The successful applicant will be required to complete a medical history questionnaire and must agree to undergo and pass a pre-employment physical examination, based on the physical requirements of the position, prior to employment. The physician will be selected and paid for by the District. Disabilities not related to the essential physical job requirements will not preclude the applicant from being hired.
  2. Education Code 87408.6 states that no person shall be initially employed by a community college district in an academic or classified position unless the person has submitted to an examination within the past sixty (60) days to determine that he or she is free of active tuberculosis.
  3. As a condition of employment the position you are applying for will require that you provide fingerprints to the local police department. The fee charged by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for the fingerprint report is the employee's responsibility. If you should be offered this position you will be asked to sign a payroll deduction form which will authorize the District to deduct the fee charged by the DOJ from your first paycheck.
