OVERVIEW:
Under the direction of an administrator, performs a variety of duties and responsibilities related to maintaining assigned rooms, buildings and office spaces in a clean and orderly fashion.



Representative Duties:

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
The duties recorded below are representative of the duties of the class and are not intended to cover all the duties performed by incumbent(s) of any particular position. The essential duties of the class are indicated with an asterisk *.

  1. Strips, waxes and buff floors; bonnet buffs and extracts carpets*
  2. Dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork*
  3. Cleans restrooms; cleans and washes chalk and/or white boards, windows, walls and polishes metal work.
  4. Maintains and takes care of equipment and materials; moves and arranges furniture and equipment; sets up buildings, rooms for dances, parties, meetings and special events*
  5. Makes minor non-technical repairs, replacing lights, adjusting shades, blinds, desks and other furniture*
  6. Loads trash into trucks, drives trucks and dumps trash*
  7. Disinfects locker and shower area and gymnastic mats*
  8. Maintains supplies and refills restroom supply dispensers including towels, soap, tissues and other sanitary items*
  9. Operates a variety of custodial equipment including vacuum sweepers, floor buffers, strippers, suction vacuums, etc*
  10. Reports unlocked doors to campus police, turns off lights and locks doors*
  11. Operates a computer to perform basic data entry, access email and District announcements, etc*
  12. Performs special custodial work as requested
  13. Reports sanitary, safety and fire hazards
  14. Cleans building grounds by sweeping and picking up paper and other trash
  15. Handles and disposes biological hazardous materials; implements safety precautions associated with the use of toxic materials
  16. Renews waste receptacles and liners
  17. Assists security with suspicious persons and building security at night
  18. Serves on a variety of District committees as requested
  19. May perform other duties as assigned


Qualifications/Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduation from high school, G.E.D. or equivalent*; AND
  • One (1) year of general experience related to the duties and responsibilities of this class.
*High School education equivalency equals an adult education diploma or four (4) years of full-time paid work experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Hold and maintain a valid driver's license throughout duration of employment with the District.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working within an educational institution.
  • Two (2) years of general experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities of this class.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
May be acquired through education, training, and/or experience.

Knowledge of: the policies, procedures, rules and regulations of the District and those affecting departmental activities; the methods of cleaning and preserving floors, walls, and fixtures; cleaning and hazardous materials, disinfectants, and equipment used in custodial work; common tools and their use; basic computer usage, accessing email and utilizing software; and safety practices in performing custodial work.
Ability to: learn, interpret and successfully apply policies, procedures, rules and regulations of the District and department; learn quickly the schedules, procedures and use of custodial tools; use common power cleaning equipment; perform heavy labor; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; read and write at the level necessary for successful job performance; utilize computer skills commensurate with the required functions for this position; operate a computer to perform position functions; work within a team; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work.



Supplemental Information:

WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No assigned permanent staff to supervise. Provides work direction to substitute, short-term and student employees.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Subject to frequent lifting of low weight (5 to 25 pounds); infrequent lifting of moderate weight (26 to 50 pounds); infrequent lifting of heavy weight (50+ pounds); carrying, pushing, pulling, walking, standing, bending, moving furniture, equipment, etc.

CONTACTS:
Faculty, staff, administrators, students and the general public.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work includes indoor and outdoor environment; fumes from cleaning chemicals/hazardous materials; some positions in this class may be assigned to work during the evening.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  1. The successful applicant will be required to complete a medical history questionnaire and must agree to undergo and pass a pre-employment physical examination, based on the physical requirements of the position, prior to employment. The physician will be selected and paid for by the District. Disabilities not related to the essential physical job requirements will not preclude the applicant from being hired.
  2. Education Code 87408.6 states that no person shall be initially employed by a community college district in an academic or classified position unless the person has submitted to an examination within the past sixty (60) days to determine that he or she is free of active tuberculosis.
  3. As a condition of employment the position you are applying for will require that you provide fingerprints to the local police department. The fee charged by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for the fingerprint report is the employee's responsibility. If you should be offered this position you will be asked to sign a payroll deduction form which will authorize the District to deduct the fee charged by the DOJ from your first paycheck.
