Position Summary:

The ARS (Agricultural Research Stations) as a department is comprised of twelve separate units located throughout the state of Wisconsin. The primary purpose of these stations is to provide facilities and support for the research, Extension, and educational programs of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS), University of Wisconsin-Madison. These twelve units provide CALS with a diverse range of support services, with each unit providing a program emphasis unique to agricultural and natural resource needs of the area -- outdoor laboratories, classrooms, and education centers used by scientists and students studying the biological and social sciences, natural resources, and agricultural sciences.

The fiscal and operational management of this unit is large and complex encompassing an $8.5M annual operating budget, 126 permanent employees plus more than 40 seasonal employees, over 8,000 acres of land, off-campus physical plant facilities valued at more than $45M, $7.45M farm equipment inventory, $2.34M in livestock, and $2.48M in stored crops. The supervision of this unit requires a person with exceptional interpersonal skills and an individual who is adept at reacting to the day-to-day management pressures of a large and dynamic organization. The ARS is a diverse and complex component of the college's $127M research budget. This requires a director who is broad based in scientific training as well as an accomplished manager.

The following units make up the stations of the ARS:
- Arlington Agricultural Research Station (headquarters) at Arlington
- Hancock Agricultural Research Station at Hancock
- Kemp Natural Resources Station at Woodruff
- Lancaster Agricultural Research Station at Lancaster
- Marshfield Agricultural Research Station at Marshfield
