Degree and area of specialization:

Bachelor's degree required; significant computing coursework, projects, or experience (see below: Minimum Years and Relevant Work Experience) also required.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

This position is most appropriate for a candidate with 0-5 years of experience after graduation. However, applicants with more experience will be considered.

An ideal candidate will be a software developer with a strong background in integrating software systems, preferably using scripting languages, and who is interested in and capable of working with both people and technology to solve interesting challenges through software lifecycle tasks including: gathering requirements, design, coding, testing, documentation, troubleshooting, and supporting users.

Candidates must show a history of significant programming experience, good interpersonal skills, and ability to work well independently and collaboratively. We prefer candidates with experience in the following skills, but do not expect experience in all of them and will provide training as necessary:

* Programming in scripting languages (such as Python, Bourne shell, Perl, Ruby)
* Programming in scientific languages (such as MATLAB, R)
* Programming within a Unix (especially Linux) environment
* Reading and debugging ability in C, C++, or Java
* Designing, coding, and using automated test software
* Using common software development tools, such as for revision control, software builds, and support tickets

Experience in distributed computing (e.g., cluster, grid, or cloud computing) and Linux systems administration in a production environment is a plus, but not necessary.

The Center for High Throughput Computing (CHTC) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is a world leader in developing and supporting tools for scientific distributed computing on a campus, national, and international scale. The Center is part of the Department of Computer Sciences, an internationally recognized department, and produces the HTCondor software, collaborates with scientists from a wide spectrum of disciplines, operates a state-of-the-art computing facility with thousands of machines, promotes and supports campus use of high throughput computing technologies, and contributes to a national-scale distributed high throughput computing effort (the Open Science Grid) that is helping to transform the impact of computing on scientific discovery.
