Job Summary:

This position is for an objective level animal research technician (ART). The incumbent will function independently and be knowledgeable in nonhuman primate handling, husbandry, and caretaking techniques and will be capable of fulfilling the goals of the program. The incumbent will be familiar with standard safety precautions that are to be observed in order to safely handle the nonhuman primates and prevent the spread of disease among the nonhuman primates. The incumbent will be able to recognize nonhuman primate behavior symptomatic of an illness or injury. The incumbent will be responsible for training new ARTs, temportary employees (TE) and student caretaker staff.

Under general supervision, incumbent performs animal health checks; performs tuberculosis testing procedures; feeds animals and administers special diets depending on health concerns or specific research protocol requirements; performs standard animal treatment procedures for minor illnesses; performs blood-drawing procedures; tattoos animals; performs special procedures for infants (e.g., initiating health records and assigning identification numbers); cleans cages and other animal areas; handles animals, including training, weighing and transporting; orders supplies; enters animal health data into laboratory computers; and moves animal feeding and cleaning materials from the loading dock to appropriate storage areas.

Requirements:

-One year of nonhuman primate experience required, including at least six months experience in a laboratory animal facility or accredited animal care facility.
-Physical ability to lift, sit, stand, bend, reach, squat, twist and push to safely handle and care for the nonhuman primates is required.
- Genuine desire to work with nonhuman primates and a disposition that allows for the handling of all nonhuman primates with gentleness and kindness.
-Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
-Must be TB negative.
-Applicant will be required to have a measles titer within the first week of employment. Depending on the results of the blood test, applicant may need to be immunized.
-Allergies to animals must be controlled by medication.
-Must possess a valid driver's license that meets standards of UW Risk Management in order to operate WNPRC vehicles.
- American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Certification at the Assistant Laboratory Technician (ALAT) or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LAT) level is preferred.

Schedule Comment:

Work hours are 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Job includes a 5-day work week with weekend and holiday work required. Schedule will be Tuesday-Saturday or Sunday-Thursday. The possibility exists that schedule will include both weekend days and may require mandatory overtime.

Incumbent may be assigned to work at the WNPRC's central location on campus or either of two satellite facilities in Blue Mounds or at the WIMR (Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research, near UW Hospital).
