Systems Programmer II, University of Delaware Library, Data and Server Manageme

Description: Reporting to the head of the Data and Server Management Department and working closely with others in the Information Technology and Digital Initiatives Division, this position supports development and maintenance of the technological infrastructure for University of Delaware Library services and digital library initiatives. This infrastructure includes the Institutional Repository, library discovery services, digital collections, digital humanities, and internal services. As part of the Library Data and Server Management Department, the position develops, implements, tests and deploys new software tools, services and enhancements. The position is also responsible for systems administration, ongoing tasks in support of existing services and performs other duties as assigned. The ideal candidate will have excellent problem solving and analytical skills as well the flexibility to embrace new technologies and skill sets.

Required Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field with two years of job-related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience via internships and/or academic coursework may substitute for one year related experience

Required Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated experience with application development in Java and PHP, as well as familiarity with Perl.
  • Demonstrated experience with MySQL or Postgres.
  • Experience with Unix/Linux administration.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform effective code testing and QA testing.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team-based environment, and to communicate well with IT and non-IT staff.
  • Commitment to responsive and innovative service.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear documentation.
Preferred Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of XML/XSLT.
  • Experience working with Open Source software, including multi-platform integration.
  • Familiarity with digital content management systems and tools preferred, such as DSpace, Wordpress, or Omeka.


General Information: The University of Delaware Library makes accessible a broad range of electronic resources, including approximately 50,000 electronic and print journals, over 370 databases, and over 26,000 videos. Library collections, which are broadly based and comprehensive, include over 2.8 million volumes. The Morris Library, where the main collection is housed, is a six-acre, four-floor building which has undergone several major renovations, most recently including a refurbishment of the main Information Room completed in the Fall of 2014. The Morris Library has 275 public access workstations, wireless access in all public areas, and a state-of-the-art 15,000 square foot Student Multimedia Design Center. The Data and Server Management Department supports the development and maintenance of the technological infrastructure for University of Delaware Library services and digital library initiatives. This infrastructure includes the campus institutional repository, library discovery services, digital collections, digital humanities projects, and access to a breadth of electronic services and collections.
