Middlebury College is pleased to announce an opening for an Associate Chaplain/ Rabbi in the Charlie P. Scott Center for Spiritual and Religious Life. This is a full-time (38.75 hour), year round, regular appointment. Serving as a member of the multi-faith team of chaplain colleagues, the Associate Chaplain/ Rabbi serves the particular religious needs of the Jewish community on campus while being visibly engaged in the whole life of the College, including its campus-wide celebrations, its gatherings in times of crisis, its deliberations and discernments in the ongoing life of a highly diverse, intellectually vibrant community.

The Associate Chaplain, Rabbi will assist the Dean of Spiritual and Religious Life/Director of the Scott Center with general duties related to the Center's mission and will serve as the advisor for the Jewish community on campus. The Chaplain will support and develop programs for Jewish students and serve as a resource on matters related to Judaism, religious diversity, and interfaith engagement, working with Scott Center colleagues to create thoughtful religious life programming and provide spiritual support and guidance to members of the college community.

Responsibilities:
  • Collaborates with the Dean/Director and other chaplains in providing leadership for major College functions
  • Collaborates with the Dean/Director and other chaplains in providing pastoral care and counseling for all members of the campus community
  • Collaborates with the Dean/Director, other chaplains, and the Program Coordinator in developing religious and spiritual programming for both students and the wider community
  • Collaborates with colleagues in the Scott Center and the Dean of the College's office to support vibrant and healthy student life on campus
  • Serves as a resource for the entire campus community regarding Jewish religion, practice, and cultures
  • Supports Jewish life on campus through educational, cultural, and social programing for students, staff, faculty, and the wider community
  • Facilitates Shabbat services on campus and special services for Jewish holy days
  • Advises students and elected leaders of Hillel
  • Assists in facilitating interfaith dialogue and cooperation among student groups

    Qualifications
  • Completion of rabbinical training from accredited rabbinical school or college and membership in a rabbinical association
  • Broad-based knowledge of Jewish religion, culture, and history
  • Ability to work with Jewish students, faculty, and staff with diverse affiliations
  • Ability to work with students and colleagues in other religious traditions
  • Knowledge of best practices in pastoral counseling and ability to handle confidential information with discretion
