Associate Athletic Director- Student Services and Sport Administration

PAY GRADE: 31E

CONTEXT OF JOB:

The Associate Athletic Director-Student Services & Sport Administration at the University of Delaware is a valued member within the University and Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Services (DIARS), upholding and embracing the departmental mission of "Inspiring Greatness Together."

Under the limited direction of the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student Services & Sport Administration/SWA, position will be responsible for collaborating with team members on all facets of sports administration for UD Athletics' 21 varsity athletics programs, and the successful leadership of the Student Services and Career Services for Athletes team. The incumbent will lead the creation, execution and metrics of success for each varsity program's vision planning, strategy and ongoing assessment efforts, in collaboration with each Head Coach. This includes but is not limited to: working with head coaches on program strategy and metric of success, supervision and evaluation of coaches, monitoring budget and NCAA compliance, and working with the head coach to create and manage an environment conducive to both academic and competitive success.

The Associate Athletic Director is responsible for fostering a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness throughout all levels of the organization, including but not limited to, staffing, recruitment, team culture, and communications.

Interactions are extensive, both within and outside the department, including Senior University Administration (e.g., President, Provost, EVP, VP & General Counsel, etc.), Board of Trustees, University offices of the Registrar, Student Financial Services and Admissions, all members of Athletics and Recreation Services, institutional representatives from CAA and/or visiting institutions, outside group representatives, parents, alumni, fans and general public.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Team Leadership (25%)
  • Manages the Student Services and Career Services for Athletes team. This includes providing leadership, setting and evaluating individual goals, developing and sustaining appropriate training, and monitoring primary focus area of team members, as well as assessment and evaluation of processes and leadership within team.
  • Summarizes and reports on all team responsibilities and activities.
  • Drives a culture of analytics to pursue continuous improvement in all responsible areas.
  • Develops and manages a team budget.
  • Proactively builds and maintains positive and collaborative working relationships with colleagues across campus to enhance the Athletic Department brand and the University of Delaware mission.
  • Proactively maintains knowledge of current trends in the areas of responsibility:
  • Participating in peer networking opportunities
  • Participating in professional education opportunities
  • Monitoring trade publications and websites

Student Services (25%)
  • Position will lead the Student Services and Career Services for Athletes team, with responsibility for the following:
  • Oversees and manages the budget for Student Services and Career Services.
  • Manage the Assistant Director for Student Services & Leadership/SAAC . Working in collaboration with Student Life staff, develop, implement and evaluate all programming specific to the 4-year student-athlete experience specific to academics, leadership development, community services and career prep.
  • Working in collaboration with Student Life and the Director of Recreation Services, develop, implement and evaluate appropriate programs for students participating in recreational sports.
  • Responsible for the developing, coordinating, and evaluating of all community involvement and service opportunities for student-athletes and students participating with recreational services.
  • Working in partnership with Student Life, create, develop and evaluate new student orientation and transition programming for all new student athletes, including mentorship opportunities.
  • Responsible for the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, working with leadership to develop an effective experience for the student-athletes.
  • Work in partnership with Coaches, Leadership team members and University Partners in the effective implementation of freshman orientation, freshman seminar, and other athletic related curriculum.

Sport Administration (50%)
  • In partnership with the Senior Associate Athletic Director/SWA, work with head coaches on program strategy and metric of success, supervision and evaluation of coaches, monitoring budget and NCAA compliance, and working with the head coach to create and manage an environment conducive to both academic and competitive success.
  • Primary sports administrator for several programs, except those with AD oversight (currently, Football, Men's & Women's Basketball) and/or SWA oversight.
  • Annual Team Planning, strategy, and collaboration with support units to meet program vision and goals.
  • Identify scheduling strategy for all programs; define creative funding strategies when not aligned with current budget.
  • Annual Head Coach evaluations.
  • Annual salary and retention strategy review for all coaches.
  • Student-Athlete surveys, Exit Interviews, data collection, assessment, and distribution.
  • Presence around teams, at home events, championships, other team functions such as alumni, donor, or community engagement activities.
  • Role within coaching searches, new hires, as well as professional growth and development of Head and Assistant Coaches.
  • Focus and evaluation of program culture and student-athlete welfare within each program, aligning with Blue Hen definition and Departmental vision for student-athlete experience.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's Degree, Master's degree preferred in sports management or related field and at least seven to ten years of experience.
  • Passion for working with student-athletes, coaches, and staff in a university athletic department that is committed to excellence.
  • Commitment to the success and enhancement of the student-athlete experience.
  • Experience working with Varsity Athletics.
  • Experience as a student-athlete and/or coach.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations governing intercollegiate athletics as well as knowledge of overall Student-Athlete experience.
  • Sound judgment and leadership qualities that involve a high-level of confidentiality and discretion.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to be both thoughtful and results-oriented.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Experience in planning and executing large interactive events.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Experience evaluating programs, budgets, and staff and coaches.
  • Commitment to the development of leadership and performance of staff.
  • Ability to work successfully in a fast-paced, performance driven environment.
  • Ability to think analytically and strategically.
