CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under limited direction of the Business Officer, the Financial Analyst is responsible for the fiscal management and oversight of the departments and centers within the College. This position performs complex financial/budgetary projections, analyses of actual activity and report generation using a variety of data sources and techniques. The Financial Analyst will be responsible for the development of a budget model for the college, departments and centers within the context of the University budgeting model. This position will coordinate all aspects of the sponsored research contracts and grants administration for the Lerner College; including oversight of pre-award preparation and submission of proposals, assistance with post-award management of research funds, preparation of financial reports and closing of research projects. A high level of independent judgment, initiative and problem-solving skills, and the ability to demonstrate a high degree of confidentiality and discretion are required.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and prepare reports utilizing various reporting and analysis tools, including but not limited to - PeopleSoft Query, advanced Excel and Cognos. These reports support the budgetary preparation, including analysis of financial, student, and HR activity in comparison to anticipated financial/budgetary outcome at both the department and college levels. Reports will also be used to maintain financial data integrity college-wide.

  • Design and implement methods for compiling existing information to improve reporting capability and information.

  • Assist in the reporting and monitoring of the College and Departmental multi-year projection report and developing long-range financial models for forecasting.

  • Prepare materials to summarize and justify program budget requests, including data gathering and reporting and trend analyses and provide special research and analysis as requested.

  • Monitor and track college-level obligations.

  • Provide direction to department personnel in completion of budget and revenue projection reports as needed for Dean's Office and department chairs.

  • Assist Business Officer with the management and timely data gathering from all sources for budget planning.

  • Provide individual training for College and departmental users in all aspects of financial monitoring and reporting following UD guidelines.

  • Coordinate with faculty and principal investigators in providing the solicitation information and sponsor requirements for pre-award processing.

  • Collect and review proposal information including budget justification, certifications, and completed budget.

  • Review effort reporting, labor allocation, cost share/match documentation, and verify overhead return.

  • Ensure monthly/quarterly internal financial reporting and external sponsor grant reporting is completed on time. Oversee close-out process for contracts and grants.

  • Perform other duties as required for unit effectiveness.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Management Information Systems or a related field with two to three years of job-related experience.
  • Proficient knowledge in budget preparation, analysis and financial management.
  • Demonstrated ability to use advance techniques in spreadsheet and database management (Excel/Access), query writing and report generation using a variety of data sources.
  • Experience with UD Financials, PeopleSoft Grants, Cognos Report Studio highly preferred.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and decision making skills.
  • Ability to analyze and monitor grants and awards according to sponsored guidelines.
  • Ability to be flexible, work independently and have high accountability for a large volume of work.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to interact with people of diverse backgrounds, skills and abilities.
  • Experience in a higher education institution preferred.
