Under the general supervision of the Grounds Supervisor, to perform a wide variety of routine grounds keeping duties with only occasional instruction or assistance; responsible for the care, upkeep and maintenance of all outdoor and common areas, including: lawns, landscaped areas, sidewalks, pathways, trash enclosures, roofs and courtyards, and to perform related work as required.

 

Examples of Duties: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Plant and cultivate trees, grass, flowers, and shrubs.

• Maintain landscaped areas, cut and edge lawns and borders.

• Rake leaves, sweep lawns, sidewalks, and related areas.

• Prepare soil for various kinds of planting; seed new lawns.

• Operate power lawn mowers, edgers, blowers, and sprayers.

• Assist in the scheduling of grounds maintenance and gardening work according to weather, time and equipment requirements.

• Clean and repair fields and facilities following events.

• Keep clean and empty trash cans.

• Assist in moving and arranging furniture and equipment for special events.

• May oversee the work of others on assigned projects.

• May perform preventive maintenance on grounds equipment.

• Replace and/or repair faulty drains, cracked sidewalks, and blacktop as necessary.

• Operate District vehicles.

• Perform related work as required.

 

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

1. Proper methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the grounds maintenance trade.

2. Basic types of plants and shrubs, their characteristics and care requirements.

3. Plant care techniques.

4. Basic math.

5. Simple record keeping.

6. Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

 

Ability to:

7. Read blueprints, design landscaping plans, and plans lawn layouts.

8. Use hand tools, such as shovels, hoes, and rakes.

9. Maintain assigned hand and power tools and equipment in clean working order providing proper security and maintenance.

10. Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices, and possession of a valid, appropriate, and unrestricted California Driver's License.

11. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

12. Use and care for hand tools, such as shovels, hoes, rakes and those common to the average tool box.

13. Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

 

Education and Experience:

15. Individuals possessing the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above are considered to possess the necessary education.

16. Recent experience in grounds maintenance.

 

Licenses and Certifications:

Possession of a valid, appropriate class, unrestricted California Driver's License.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

One year of recent grounds keeping, gardening, or general maintenance experience.

Mechanical aptitude, good communication skills, and a strong sense of customer service.

 

Conditions of Employment

This is a full-time, 12-month per year position. The normal hours of work will be 6:00 am to 2:30 pm Monday through Friday. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.

 

Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; the inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment.

The person holding this position is considered a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in Coast Community College District policies, procedures, and Title IX. (Reference: BP/AP 5910)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Willingness to work overtime as required in emergencies to meet deadlines.

Outdoor and shop environment: varying temperatures, dust, oil, grease, gases.

Moving and arranging of furniture and equipment for special events.

Operate equipment at heights of up to 80 feet.
