Definition

Under the supervision of the Orange Coast College Director of Marketing and Public Relations, plans, conceptualizes, and prepares video marketing media content for visual communications  for social networking, intranet portals, internet, kiosks and other means to develop branding, promote college programs, and recruit potential students. DISTINGUISHING CAREER FEATURES:

The Communications Media Specialist is a senior-level technical position requiring specialized training in video all aspects of video production including, but not limited to conceptualizing and coordinating production of informational videos, requiring a demonstrated understanding of best-and-emerging practices for front-to-back video production to reach a broad range of audiences and to promote the College as a leader in higher education and student engagement. 

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Designs, conceptualizes, and coordinates production of informational and other videos.

• Produces videos for use in educational and current events functions.  Meets with staff to develop and discuss course, meeting, or conference objectives.

• Coordinates video production activities and field shoots, involving logistic arrangements, directing and coordinating casts, crews, props, and wardrobes, and lighting and special effects.   Edits content to produce the videos.

• Performs a variety of technical duties supporting audio and video media production such as, but not limited to, pre-production planning and post-production editing and titling, writing of scripts, dubbing of tape-to-tape or film, slide shows, and filmstrip programs recorded on tape.  Assures high technical quality of final product.

• Modifies images and videos to blend and fit with proposed formatting and to be adapted for video and storyboards, marquees, and information centers.

• Consults with and recommends options to administration, faculty and staff for video and other media enhanced communications.

• Participates in developing distribution strategies and process for airing videos and other marketing tools through social media.

• Prepares and distributes program, procedure, and participant materials and manuals, technical documentation describing equipment operation, room setup, and voice projection for areas such as outdoors or large gatherings.

• Develops, catalogs, and maintains a library and databases of original and stock visuals, video archives, unused footage by subject matter, and legal documents.

• Participates in integrating video content into departmental web pages that contain consistent formatting.

• Organizes the filming and studio areas to assure compliance with safety standards and the security of equipment.  Performs preventive maintenance on equipment.

• Prepares and sequences layout, organizes, and facilitates production aspects of special events and conferences that occur on evenings and weekends.  May prepare videos and slide shows for broadcast of academic and non-academic processes and materials.

• Performs logistics functions for productions such as preparing cost estimates and sequencing for materials and labor.  Participates in developing and monitoring budgets for video production projects.

• Conducts periodic research of industry trends in broadcast technology.

• Ensures that videos and other marketing sources have the appropriate permissions, clearances, rights, and releases, and comply with legal requirements. Assures that all productions and content comply with ADA requirements for size and close captioning.

• Primarily responsible for the piloting of the College video aerial drone.

• Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

 

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

Knowledge of:

• In depth technical knowledge of the principles, practices, and processes associated with all phases of video and multimedia production.

• Video and multimedia production equipment used from pre-to-post production.

• Editing dialog, non-linear editing and camera work.

• FAA regulations for filming and wireless broadcasting utilizing drone technology.

• Marketing communications, video and media branding, social media, and public relations concepts.

• Prioritizing, planning an communicating project steps and sequencing.

• Electronic video equipment, computer-aided software, and peripherals used for video production.

• Common office productivity and visual presentation software.

• Math skill to read, summarize, and record numbers and measurements and prepare limited scope cost estimates and project budgets.

• Well-developed language and writing skill to prepare scripts, speaking points, and professional correspondence.

• Well-developed human relations skills to work cooperatively with others to explain creative and technical concepts and facilitate small group discussions.

 

Ability to:

• Edit dialog, non-linear editing, and camera work.

• Prioritizing, planning and communicating project steps and sequencing.

• Electronic video equipment, computer-aided software, and peripherals used for video production.

• Independently perform all of the duties of this position.

• Design and produce computerized multimedia presentations and programming.

• Operate all equipment related to video and multimedia production such as and not limited to cameras, filming devices, special effects applications, microphone systems, lighting, and other specialized equipment common to live shoots and video production.

• Work with end users for determining specific needs and creatively develop projects to meet those needs.

• Plan, prioritize, and schedule projects to meet timelines.

• Work with administration, faculty, and students in supporting efforts to present information and materials over social and learning networks.

• Work with peers in a  team environment and with individuals beyond the department in a professional manner

• Work in a studio environment subject to noise from equipment operation.

• Work a schedule that is time-flexible and will conform to optimal shooting times, including split shifts and non-traditional work hours.

 

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a media or communications field.

One year of video production experience.

Additional relevant experience in advertising or media production may substitute for some higher education.

 

Licenses and Certificates:

Requires the ability to obtain a valid California driver's license.

 

Conditions of Employment

This is a full time, 12 month per year position. The normal hours of work are to be arranged between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.

 

The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee.

PAY PHILOSOPHY:

All movement on the salary schedule will occur July 1 of each year for all classified employees.
