Position Overview

Facilities Services supports KU's mission of learning, scholarship, and creative endeavor by operating and maintaining the University's physical plant and grounds. The incumbent is responsible for performing a wide variety of maintenance and emergency repair tasks to University buildings (physical structure, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems), with employee being involved in a regular program of inspection and repair at a journeyman level using more than one skilled trade.

Job Description

50% - Follows an established inspection routine in an assigned group of buildings to needed maintenance and repairs to various mechanical/electrical, plumbing and building structural equipment such as charging air conditioning units, making necessary adjustment to units, electrical troubleshooting. Repairs and replaces drinking fountains, plumbing fixtures, faucets, valves and traps. Diagnoses leaks, stoppages, inadequate supply or faulty operation of water, sewer, steam, gas and air systems, cleans and repairs defective components. Remounts mirrors, lavatories, towel dispensers and other restroom fixtures. Performs lubrication, cleaning inspection, changes belts and filters in equipment. Performs repairs on heating ventilating and air conditioning units, electric motors, gear reducer, air compressors, various electrical and pneumatic control components, etc.
40% - Responds to emergency calls involving loss of utilities or equipment failure. Resets breakers, helps repair leaks in water or air lines. Repairs are performed as time and expertise permits. May assist Central Shop staff with more complex repairs.
5% - Other Related Work as Assigned: Maintains an adequate supply of tools, parts, and supplies for jobs. Responds to after-hours emergency calls as needed. Assists with other maintenance areas and in other work areas as assigned. Assists with snow removal and surface treatment.
5% - Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency.
  • Three (3) years of experience in a skilled craft area. Certificate of completion from a vocational school or an associate's degree in a building in mechanical trade area may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
  • Must have a valid driver's license by the time of hire.
  • Position Requirements:
  • Carry up to 20 pounds constantly and up to 50 pounds occasionally with or without accommodation.
  • Physical strength sufficient to stand the strain of working long hours at custodial tasks.
  • Work under a variety of extremes of temperature and weather, both inside and outdoors.
  • Work overtime as needed.
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
  • Report to work during declared periods of inclement weather if required.


  • Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of HVAC preventive maintenance experience.
  • Knowledge of the standard practices, tools, equipment and materials associated with a variety of skilled crafts and building trades.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of skilled crafts and building trades.
  • Ability to read and correctly interpret blueprints, electrical or plumbing schematics.
  • Experience working in a college or university setting
