Salary Range: $53,646 to $82,288 per year, depending on education and experience; maximum initial salary step placement on the faculty salary schedule is step 9.

Cabrillo College provides a doctoral stipend of $3,582 per year for eligible faculty.

Benefits: Cabrillo College currently provides a benefit stipend that employees apply towards benefit selections for medical, dental, life and long-term disability insurance.

Days Per Year: Full-time, categorically-funded 175-day assignment during fall and spring semesters with an additional 20 days to be worked in the summer.

Start Date: This *categorically-funded Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Agricultural Technology Specialist assignment is scheduled to begin in March 2017, pending continued categorical-funding and Governing Board ratification. This position is a year-to year assignment up to three and a half (3.5) years, pursuant to Ed Code 87470. In addition, assignment may be at various campus locations; days, evenings, and/or weekends and will include part or all of the summer.

About Cabrillo College: Situated on Monterey Bay in the county of Santa Cruz, California, Cabrillo College is one of the most highly regarded community colleges in the state for its success in the area of transfer and career education and currently serves over 12,500 students. Cabrillo College transfers many of its students to three nearby universities - the University of California at Santa Cruz, San Jose State University in the heart of Silicon Valley, and California State University at Monterey Bay. Cabrillo's career education is closely connected to the nearby Silicon Valley business environment as well as that of the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Cabrillo focuses on student-centered learning and has a tradition of collegial governance.

Faculty at Cabrillo College have a long history of participatory governance and participate in all levels of decision-making at the college. Cabrillo provides an opportunity to learn, collaborate, create, and make a difference in the lives of its students and community.

The Solari Green Technology Center (SGTC) is located near the Watsonville Center which also serves as a teaching facility to students and the greater community. It is built to top level platinum standard in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

About the Grant: Cabrillo College has received a $5.4 million, five-year STEM grant from the Department of Education (on a year-to-year basis). The grant is specifically geared towards program development at Hispanic-Serving institutions.

The goals of the Sustainable Agriculture track of the grant are as follows:
  • To develop and revise key Agriculture Technology curricula to infuse content and resources related to sustainability.
  • To establish transferable AS degrees in Sustainably Agriculture Technology.
  • To expand transfer pathways to Agriculture bachelor's degrees at University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) institutions.
  • To create robust student-centered services including advising, coaching, and tutoring, with outcomes including increased enrollment, degree completion, and transfer to expand current Agricultural Technology facilities and infuse technology to meet the industry demands in the area of sustainability.


Examples of Duties

Under the day-to-day direction from the Horticulture Department Chair in collaboration with the Dean of Natural and Applied Sciences:

  • Develop/revise curriculum for new or revised classes as needed to highlight the technology from the grant
  • Assist with development of articulation agreements with selected CSU's and UC's
  • Solicit quotes for equipment and supplies as needed for projects
  • Generate purchase orders for supplies and equipment
  • Oversee greenhouse specifications, RFP, and coordination with input from the DC and FFOP
  • Oversee construction of a new greenhouse for substrate and water-based food production systems and an indoor vertical food-production system using LED light technology
  • Oversee installation of the water treatment system for recycling greenhouse irrigation water; LED lights in existing greenhouse, and solar panels and greenhouse computer control system on the new greenhouse
  • Work with the STEM Research Analyst on data in meeting grant goals and objectives
  • Track expenditures
  • Facilitate timely completion and implementation of all projects and related tasks
  • Assist the project manager with annual performance reports and other reports as required
  • Communicate effectively with various College departments, divisions and personnel, including grant personnel
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Direct collection of project data; develop and assist in project evaluations with project manager
  • Participate in faculty and staff oversight and evaluation related to the project
  • Perform related duties as required and/or assigned


Minimum Qualifications

Required Education from a U.S. Department of Education recognized accredited organization and licensure qualifications:

  • Any Bachelor's degree AND two (2) years of professional experience in Agricultural Engineering or Ornamental Horticulture OR
  • Any Associate's degree AND six (6) years of professional experience in Agricultural Engineering or Ornamental Horticulture OR
  • The Equivalent OR
  • A lifetime California community College Instructor Credential in Agricultural Services and Processing or Ornamental Horticulture
Equivalency

Candidates without the specified degrees listed above must complete and submit an Application for Equivalency Determination. Additionally, candidates must provide documentation, as part of this application process, sufficient to convince the committee that the candidate possesses the equivalent of these minimum qualifications, including the depth and breadth of discipline knowledge plus general education.

Required Professional Expertise:
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students of diverse academic, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds, including students with disabilities
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others
  • Ability to follow directions from project leader
Required Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Three years of recent experience working in an Agricultural/Horticultural field and/or successful experience teaching and/or student support services in a Agricultural/Horticultural field
  • Experience working with community and/or professional organizations
  • Experience in curriculum development and personnel management
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving students, at the community college level, with diverse backgrounds, interests, goals and abilities
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the community college philosophy
  • Principles of program coordination, organization and administration
  • Knowledge of and expertise in computer and word processing applications related to the work
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in planning, evaluating, and following through on projects and related activities
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team (project staff/college faculty)
  • Ability to effectively organize work, set priorities and meet critical deadlines
  • Ability to exhibit and apply effective leadership and supervisory skills
Desired Qualifications/Performance Expectations:
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish
  • Knowledge of bilingual/bicultural populations and others traditionally underrepresented in higher education
  • Prior experience working in an Hispanic Serving Institution two or four year college or university serving 25% or more Hispanic students)
  • Recent teaching experience at community college level
