Position/Job Summary

Perform patrol, inspection and/or related protective services duties to provide a comprehensive program of security, parking, and related public safety services to protect lives and safeguard the property of the College. Participate in directing traffic and enforcing parking rules and regulations, assist with crowd control for special events, issue citations, and respond to various alarms and assist with drills; make inspections of facilities for security breaches and fire and safety hazards/risks; perform crime prevention duties and related assignments. The incumbent will serve as primary backup for the communications specialist. The incumbent is also considered to be essential personnel and will be subject to reporting to work or remaining at work on occasion and without advance notice dependent upon the nature and urgency of the situation and as conditions or circumstances warrant.

Position/Job Responsibilities

1. Patrol assigned campus zones primarily on foot to monitor occupancy and use of facilities, building lockups, abandoned and lost property, road and sidewalk conditions, and damage to buildings, grounds and facilities; secure areas and equipment and unlocked safes; report conditions or acts disrupting or hazardous to community life or property. Maintain contact with on duty personnel.

2. Respond to authorized key calls of students, faculty, staff, administration, maintenance workers and contractors. Provide assistance to on duty personnel as needed and assist students locked out of vehicles and jump starts.

3. Respond to various alarms in accordance with departmental procedures and assist with campus fire drills as directed.

4. Perform visual inspections of life safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, lighting, exit signs, call boxes, elevator phones and blue lights to ensure proper functionality and document and report any maintenance needs.

5. Perform parking enforcement duties to include issuing tickets and towing of vehicles; monitor and enforce fire lane and no parking zone regulations; ensure vehicles have proper parking permits and identify and report use of fraudulent parking permits. Maintain daily records of violations.

6. Participate in and provide support for special events. Participate in traffic and crowd control at special events such as sporting events, commencement, freshman orientation, registration, and other special events.

7. Serve as field training officer in the areas of security and communications as assigned by a sergeant to include training on policies and procedures, supervising activities of the trainee, and documentation of trainee progress.

8. Serve in the capacity of Communications Specialist as needed or assigned; receive emergency and non-emergency calls requesting public safety assistance: determine nature, location and priority of the call and dispatch patrol cars and personnel accordingly; assume responsibility for coordinating radio communication between personnel on duty and off campus agencies. Contact fire and ambulance and other law enforcement agencies in emergency situations and coordinate proper response. Maintain communication with personnel, track location, conditions of situation, and respond to requests for assistance: Operate two-way radio, cell phone and/or land line telephone.

9. Service as liaison with students, staff, faculty, administrators, and guests and provide general information and direction to students, parents and campus visitors.

10. Provide emergency first aid response to members of the College community and visitors in accordance with established procedures. Operate the traffic vehicle and escort emergency vehicles to various locations on campus.

11. Provide administrative support and process a variety of reports and records including parking enforcement and parking-related complaint reports, service requests, security violation reports, life safety reports, voluntary and supplementary reports ARMS reports, and Judicial Action reports; maintain records, ensure integrity of logs; issue radios, keys and other equipment.

12. May provide customer service in support of Parking Services as assigned; greet visitors, answer telephones, and provide general parking and traffic services information.

Position/Job Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and previous experience working in the security field; ability to successfully complete the New York DCJS Security Guard training, specialized emergency communications/dispatch training, and the Ithaca College Office of Public Safety field training and evaluation program; a minimum of 21 years of age; possession of or ability to obtain a New York State drivers license and must meet the eligibility requirements to drive a College vehicle; ability and flexibility to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, special events, and overtime (scheduled and unscheduled), and demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position are required. Applicants will be subject to a background check and will be a member of the collective bargaining unit.
