Degree and area of specialization:

Bachelor's degree required in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field; Masters in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Required Experience/Demonstrated Abilities:
* Three (3) years' experience in the design, operation, analysis and deployment of mechanical and electromechanical systems (a minimum of 7 years required for appointment at the Senior level).
* Project Management experience, including estimating, defining work-flows and budgets, coordinating and tracking project activities, and writing progress reports.
* Experience or familiarity with Earned Value Management (EVM).
* Computer Aided Design - Skill in using or the ability to quickly learn the use of SolidWorks.
* Ability and willingness to work in the field in cold and high altitude regions throughout the world; willingness to deploy for durations of up to 3 months in support of science projects.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Proficiency in using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Additional Experience in the following is preferred:
* Experience in the design and operation of mechanical and electromechanical systems, specifically in polar environments.
* Strong working knowledge and experience with control systems, electromechanical devices, andelectronics; knowledge of LabView software is a plus.
* Knowledge of hot water drilling technology is a plus.
* Experience in supporting mechanical systems in the field; i.e., commissioning mechanical and electromechanical systems, troubleshooting equipment, adjusting/repairing systems.
* Knowledge and experience in fabrication and shop practices.
* Experience with Microsoft Project.

Position Summary:

This position is located within the Space, Science and Engineering Center's (SSEC) Ice Drilling Design and Operations (IDDO) unit. IDDO designs, builds, operates, and maintains polar ice/rock coring and drilling equipment on behalf of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). The primary responsibility of the IDDO Engineer/Project Manager is to participate in, oversee and direct activities surrounding equipment development as well as maintenance and upgrade work. Duties will include oversight of a portfolio of projects with varying scope, budget and duration. The Engineer/Project Manager will actively work on system/component designs and will oversee the activities of other project team members in order to achieve IDDO's annual objectives.

The University of Wisconsin Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) is a research and development center with an international reputation for developing instrumentation for both terrestrial and space flight applications. SSEC's mission includes the support of faculty and academic staff led research, development, fabrication and implementation of space flight experiments, as well as the development of new meteorological research tools for national and international use.
