Salary Range: $53,646 to $82,288 per year, salary placement determined by documented education and experience; maximum initial salary step placement on the faculty salary schedule is step 9.

Cabrillo College provides a doctoral stipend of $3,582 per year for eligible faculty.

Days Per Year: This position enjoys a 175-day work day schedule; including summer and/or winter months.

Start Date: This *categorically-funded Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Project Specialist assignment is scheduled to begin in February 2017, pending continued categorical-funding and Governing Board ratification. This position is a year-to year assignment up to five (5) years, pursuant to Ed Code 87470. In addition, assignment may be at various campus locations; days, evenings, and/or weekends and will include part or all of the summer.

About the Department: The Solari Green Technology Center (SGTC) is located near the Watsonville Center which also serves as a teaching facility to students and the greater community. It is built to top level platinum standard in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

About the Grant: Cabrillo College has received a $5.4 million, five-year STEM grant from the United States Department of Education (on a year-to-year basis). The grant is specifically geared towards program development at Hispanic-Serving institutions.

The goals of the grant are as follows:

• To develop/revise key STEM curricula to infuse content and resources related to environmental sustainability and to develop/pilot student-centered services that promote STEM success, persistence, degree completion, and transfer.
• To establish transferable AS degrees in Sustainable Agricultural Technology and Environmental Science, as well as a new Certificate in Sustainability, while expanding transfer pathways to "green" STEM bachelor's degrees at University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) institutions.
• To create robust student-centered services including STEM advising, coaching for STEM majors, and STEM tutoring, with outcomes including increased STEM enrollment, degree completion, and transfer.

Examples of Duties

Under direction of the STEM Project Director, and in collaboration with the Division Dean of Natural and Applied Sciences (NAS), responsibilities include:

• Coordinate the daily implementation of STEM grant activities
• Coordinate the STEM coaching system - a mentoring student-centered service designed to promote STEM persistence, degree completion, and transfer. The proposed coaching system will match first-year student participants with more advanced student coaches who will provide personalized support for addressing extra-curricular issues impacting college persistence, including personal commitments and financial challenges.
• Develop new student-centered services, provide appropriate training to advisors and STEM Coaches,
• Lead the evaluation of service outcomes, and work closely with the contracted Research Analyst to implement a well-designed study of the impact of STEM coaching on the STEM persistence of Latino and other underrepresented students.
• Assist the project director with annual performance reports and other reports as required
• Assist Curriculum Specialist in researching existing undergraduate sustainability courses within the CSU and UC systems and provide suggestions on how best to incorporate them at Cabrillo's campus
• Assist Curriculum Specialist in providing professional development and support for faculty members involved in developing, revising, and piloting new sustainability curriculum in STEM courses. This will include supporting the development of project-based and service-learning curriculum
• Coordinate all aspects of the new STEM Coaching program and other STEM-related program activities
• Work directly with students and their families in understanding the importance of STEM education and careers
• Establish ties with Cabrillo STEM alumni to develop professional relationships between alumni and present STEM students
• Facilitate timely completion and implementation of all projects and related tasks
• Participate in STEM committee and task force meetings as required or assigned; may be required to drive to various campus and off campus locations
• Communicate effectively with various college departments, divisions and personnel, including grant personnel
  Establish and maintain effective working relationships
• Develop and effectively present at workshops and informational meetings
• Perform related duties as required and/or assigned

Equivalency

Candidates without the specified degrees listed above must complete and submit an Application for Equivalency Determination. Additionally, candidates must provide documentation, as part of this application process, sufficient to convince the committee that the candidate possesses the equivalent of these minimum qualifications, including the depth and breadth of discipline knowledge plus general education.

Required Professional Expertise:

• Knowledge of and commitment to teaching strategies and methods which enhance student success at community colleges.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to teach the courses or perform the duties effectively as described above (teaching demonstration will be part of the interview).
• Ability to communicate effectively with students of diverse academic, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds, including students with disabilities.
• Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others.

Required Knowledge and Abilities:

• Three (3) years of recent experience working in a STEM field and/or successful experience teaching and/or student support services in a STEM field
• Experience working with community and/or professional organizations
• Experience in curriculum development and personnel management
• Demonstrated commitment to serving students, at the community college level, with diverse backgrounds, interests, goals and abilities
• Knowledge of and commitment to the community college philosophy
• Principles of program coordination, organization and administration
• Knowledge of and expertise in computer and word processing applications related to the work
• Ability to exercise sound judgment in planning, evaluating, and following through on projects and related activities
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team (project staff/college faculty)
• Ability to effectively organize work, set priorities and meet critical deadlines
• Ability to exhibit and apply effective leadership and supervisory skills

Other Requirements:

• Must possess at time of hire and maintain a valid California Class C driver's license and a safe driving record during the course of employment
• Must be willing to work days, evenings and weekends at various campus and off campus locations; must be able to work during summer months

Desired Qualifications/Performance Expectations:

• Experience mentoring, advising or coaching students in STEM disciplines
• Experience offering professional development to faculty members, preferably within project-based learning and service-learning domains
• Knowledge and passion for working with Latino and other under-represented students in STEM fields
• Familiarity with California's community college system
• Knowledge of active learning pedagogies, such as project-based learning and service learning.
• Experience with educational research or evaluation of students outcomes
• Ability to work on an interdisciplinary team
• English/Spanish bilingual ability
• Knowledge of bilingual/bicultural populations and others traditionally underrepresented in higher education
• Prior experience working at an Hispanic Serving Institution two (2) or four (4) year college or university serving 25% or more Hispanic students)
• Recent teaching experience at community college level
