Degree and area of specialization:

BS/BA in Biology, Physiology, Animal Sciences or related field required.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Knowledge and understanding of human physiology, endocrinology and biology is required. Also, the candidate must have at least 6 months of experience in the handling and manipulation of non-human primates. The applicant must be well-organized, self-motivated, and have excellent interpersonal skills (e.g. a team player). Proficiency in computer data management required. An ability to obtain venous blood samples is also required.

License or Certificate:

BL2+ and radiation certification will be acquired upon hire.

Position Summary:

The Wisconsin Primate Research Center's (WNPRC) mission is to increase our understanding of basic primate biology and to improve human health and quality of life through research. WNPRC's Scientific Protocol Implementation (SPI) unit is seeking a motivated self-starting Research Specialist with an eye for detail and a desire to make a difference in the world. SPI provides consistent, reliable research support and collaboration for non-human primate investigator projects that utilize WNPRC resources. SPI is a national resource for non-human primate research in that the unit functions using a team science approach (i.e., research specialists act as on-site laboratory staff and unit heads act as co-investigators) on projects for affiliates, core scientists, and their collaborators. SPI also organizes all support that is needed from other WNPRC units. This strategy allows for efficient teamwork on scientific projects and the additional collaborative input of the scientific and veterinary heads provides full service interactions for outside affiliate investigators.

Additional Information:

Excellent verbal and written skills and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint are required. Must be able to work independently as well as part of a team. Candidate should have an understanding of research principles and regulations, be detail oriented, and possess excellent interpersonal, problem-solving and organizational skills.

-Must be TB negative.
-Successful candidate will be required to provide written documentation to University Health Services showing one of the following: 1) receipt of measles vaccination; 2) laboratory evidence of immunity to measles; or 3) laboratory confirmation of measles disease. Individuals without the aforementioned documentation will need to have a measles titer within the first week of employment. Depending on the results of the blood test, employee may need to be immunized.
-Allergies to animals must be controlled by medication.
-Must possess a valid driver's license that meets the standards of UW Risk Management in order to operate WNPRC vehicles.

The possibility exists that this position may be extended or become a renewable appointment.
