Job Description Summary

The School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture ( APLA ) at Auburn University is accepting applications for a full-time faculty member (12 months/year) in either a tenure-track or non-tenure track (clinical) position to serve as the Director of APLA's Urban Studio located in Birmingham, Alabama. The position begins August 16, 2017. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The Urban Studio (Center for Architecture and Urban Studies) has a 25-year history of helping generate transformative projects within greater Birmingham and throughout the state. Having recently moved its location back into the heart of downtown, the Urban Studio has reaffirmed its commitment to fully leverage the incredible opportunities occurring within the city center as Birmingham moves toward regaining its urban vitality. Within this exciting and immersive context, the Director will work with faculty, staff, students, and local community partners to continue current projects and shape new efforts, and to prompt conversations about future directions and strategies for sustaining the Urban Studio.

Responsibilities of the position include: 1) teaching (students are selected to participate based on merit), 2) engagement with the professional and public community, 3) developing and undertaking outreach and service-learning initiatives, and 4) directing the daily operations of the Urban Studio itself. The candidate may be appointed to either a tenure-track (Assistant/Associate/Full Professor) or non-tenure track (Assistant/Associate/Full Clinical Professor) position. Assigned effort and nature of appointment will differ based on whether the appointment is tenure-track or non-tenure track.

Minimum Qualifications

Requirements for this position include: a master's degree in architecture, or a professional degree in architecture and a terminal degree in a related field.

Desired Qualifications

Desired qualifications include: experience teaching design studio in a professional architecture degree program, the interest and ability to develop and teach courses which emphasize the integration of service learning and community engagement, evidence of outstanding design skills, architectural registration, cross-disciplinary professional practice experience, and experience managing business operations and personnel.
