About the Position

The Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering is dedicated to supporting the mission of San José State University: to enrich the lives of its students, to transmit knowledge to its students along with the necessary skills for applying it in the service of our society, and to expand the base of knowledge through research and scholarship. The Davidson College of Engineering and the university fosters student success and the enhancement of professional preparedness by offering an array of courses, programs and co-curricular experiences that utilize diverse learning approaches, foundational and pioneering curriculum, and state-of-the-art technology, both inside and outside the traditional classroom setting. The college has more than 30 professional industry-specific organizations such as the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, as well as multicultural and honor societies. They also house the Engineering Student Success Center with resources to support students' academic and leadership development to ensure they get the most out of their college experience. The Center provides transition support, mentoring, and tutoring programs and programs to help students prepare for their careers in engineering.

Reporting to the Chair of Computer Engineering, the incumbent will work with limited supervision to provide academic advising and related student services for students in the Computer Engineering Department. The incumbent is managing all activities and initiatives of academic advising and student success of the Computer Engineering department, which hosts four academic programs, with over 2300 majors. The incumbent is responsible for developing initiatives to improve the programs' 4-year and 6-year graduation rates and to improve undergraduate retention rates. Such services include guiding entering and continuing students through academic planning and successful paths to graduation, helping students find solutions for issues they may face, informing students about and authorizing students for relevant university policies, services and resources, developing student orientation programs, events, and projects, and coordinating with relevant university constituents to address student needs.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

- Advise undergraduate students on their academic plans and pathways to graduation and approving major course substitutions on degree requirements

- Develop a system to manage students' permission number requests, to check proper prerequisite requirements have been met, and ensure that students' enrollment needs are met within department scheduling capacities.

- Create a 4-year and 5-year degree sample plans, major forms, and prerequisite maps for each university catalog update and ensuring correctness of program requirements on the department website and the university catalog.

- Evaluate students' change of major requests and making recommendations to the Chair with respect to approval/denial decisions

- Evaluate students' academic performance and making recommendation on the list of students to be placed on major probation and major disqualification.

- Evaluate reinstatement petitions in accordance to department and university policies.

- Guide students with petitions, graduation procedures, accessing resources and services to help with addressing any issues and enhancing students' likelihood of success.

- Develop and conduct undergraduate frosh orientations, transfer orientations, and graduate orientation sessions to welcome new students and provide them with the information to transition successfully into Computer Engineering at SJSU.

- Develop initiatives to continuously improve our orientation activities and to improve student success and retention
