SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY EDITOR

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of personnel so classified.

SUMMARY:

The Science and Technology Editor will provide experimental design and statistical assistance to faculty, staff and students in the Kentucky State University (KSU) Land Grant Program and College of Agriculture, Food Science, and Sustainable Systems research and extension programs. This position is expected to increase the quality and quantity of sponsored research at KSU in agriculture and health sciences by contributing to pre-award and post-award statistical consulting, including grant preparation, writing analysis sections of grants, sample size planning, development of research specific aims and hypotheses, and tailoring statistical approaches to research aims. In addition, the position will assist in the analysis of data for theses and publications, offering resources and advice to faculty, staff, and students on research design and statistical methods, explaining statistical concepts, methods, and how to run or interpret statistical analyses.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Reviews and edits grant proposals, scientific journal articles and extension reports, federal reports for USDA, NSF, and other agencies.
  • Ensures materials are grammatically correct, properly formatted, correctly punctuated, correctly spelled, clearly written, and stylistically appropriate for their intended audience.
  • Serve as a resource to other staff as needed in matters of grammar and usage.
  • Has the ability to efficiently and accurately meet deadlines.
  • Understand multiple grant proposal and manuscript style and format requirements and keep up with any changes.
  • Review manuscripts and provide feedback to authors, listing areas that need revisions and supplying instructions on how revisions should be made.
  • Review the references and correct formatting, style, and coding.
  • Review all accepted manuscripts, including references, figures, and tables, for a list of grammatical and style points.
  • Provide instructions for how to revise all parts of the manuscript to conform to journal style.
  • Assist with the editing of all written materials, from basic publications to standard curricula.
  • Provide samples when necessary to illustrate a point.
  • Keep a database of all publications reviewed and published.
  • Send additional instructions and feedback when necessary (occasionally multiple rounds).
  • Other related duties as assigned.


MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, English or related fields. A minimum of three years' experience in writing and editing required. Experience in scientific terminology and/or editing preferred. The candidate must submit 5-10 writing/publication samples for review by the search committee.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Thorough knowledge of grammar, usage, and spelling.
  • Skill in using a wide range of reference materials.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to proof read and edit grant proposals, scientific journal articles, status reports for USDA, NSF, and other agencies.
  • Knowledge of journalistic conventions and styles; Proficient in ISBN and copyright procedures would be helpful.
  • Self-starter with the ability to conduct independent background research in response to media inquiries in a fast-paced environment and meet extremely tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work and communicate ideas in a collaborative manner with scientists, educators, and the public.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Outlook or other similar software.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in the university setting.
  • Ability to work under deadlines.
  • Will need a valid Kentucky Driver's License.


WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
  • Must be able to travel, primarily in-state (20%).
  • Occasionally may need to move light equipment and carry supplies, publications, and needed equipment for demonstration and training programs.
