COUNSELOR I

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of personnel so classified.

SUMMARY:

Under the general direction and supervision of the Director of Student Support Services, this fulltime (nine month) position will have counseling responsibility for Kentucky State University's TRiO/Student Support Services Program. The counselor will be responsible for the academic persistence, retention and graduation of the students served. The person selected will employ strategic methods through advising assistance, academic support, counseling, mentoring, financial literacy, career counseling and cultural enrichment to assist students in reaching their academic goals. This position requires good oral and written communication skills; excellent recordkeeping, and the ability to apply best practice methods to obtain measurable results.

Student Support Services is a program that is funded by the U. S. Department of Education Title IV under the Higher Education Act 1965 to assist Low-Income, First Generation and/or Disabled Students achieve a college education. Preference will be given to applicants with backgrounds similar to participants. This position is renewable based on the life cycle of federal funding.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Interview students in face to face counseling sessions.
  • Create an academic plan for each student and document the progress.
  • Create and deliver workshop informational materials.
  • Make presentations in meetings, New Student Orientations, workshops, and departmental committee trainings.
  • Responsible for developing a culturally enriching program delivery.
  • Develop Workshop material for presentations.
  • Responsible for maintaining timecard information and submitting it in a timely fashion.
  • Responsible for the development and delivery of strategic academic plans to assist with retention and graduation of SSS students.
  • Responsible for community outreach and student involvement.
  • Other related duties as required. MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

    The candidate must have an earned Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) in Education Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, Guidance Counseling, Education Psychology, English, Math, Education, or related fields that are equivalent. The candidate must have two years of experience in post-secondary education or equal experience in the field of education, or the equivalency in a professionally related field.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
    • Must have the ability to work with a diverse population of students, staff and administration.
    • Demonstrated ability to academically assist 1st generation college students.
    • Demonstrated ability in program development.
    • In-depth understanding of the college curriculum ladder.
    • Demonstrated ability to teach/counsel and /or conduct workshops
    • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
    • Ability to analyze and process information and develop good solid judgment based on the assessment.
    • Responsible for developing in-depth reports relevant to program data.
    • Demonstrated ability to create a systematic approach to career development.
    • Responsible for the overall retention and graduation of all students served.
    • Ability to develop a Plan for Academic Student Success (PASS) on an individualized student plan and follow-up.
    • Ability to navigation Microsoft Office programs, databases, and spreadsheets to create workshop presentations, reports, and data sets.
    • The ability to work within the nucleus of a team.
    • The ability to periodically travel.
    • Ability to work some evenings and weekends as prescribed.


    WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
    • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
    • Limited lifting (under thirty (30) pounds.
    • Limited/no exposure to physical risk.
