Required Qualifications: Per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. Must posses a valid CDL license Class B with passenger and Air Breaks and be able to be 19A Certified as required by NYS Department of Motor Vehicles. Must have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Appointment will be contingent upon proof of identity and eligibility for employment and successful completion of pre-employment testing for controlled substance use as mandated by the Federal Highway Administration Omnibus Transportation Act of 1991. Please note that employment cannot commence until notification for successful completion of this pre-employment testing is received. Must comply with the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (drug and alcohol testing).
Preferred Qualifications:
Brief Description of Duties: The Bus Driver's duties are as follows:
- Drive a full-size passenger bus on and off SUNY property in order to transport passengers and materials as required.
- Keep written records of trips, mileage, stopovers, fuel bridges, tolls and records of passenger counts. Report any malfunction and needed repairs to supervisor or maintenance staff. This would include the compiling of the daily bus logs from all drivers on a daily basis.
- Transport passengers with disabilities.
- Transport vehicles to and from vendors for repairs.
- Pre-trip inspection of vehicle and completion of required forms.
- Operate CB radio and/or cellular telephones as needed.
- Monitor gauges, and as necessary, refuel the tank on the vehicle.
- Check tires for visible damage.
- Check horn, directional lights, head, tail, parking and emergency lights for proper operation. Check proper operation of braking system.
- Drive Campus routes and do charters for departments and graduation work for Stony Brook University.
- Wash, sweep, clean and fuel buses, as well as vans and other state vehicles.
- In an emergency situation, the driver may be required to perform some minor repairs such as replace a bulb, put air into tires, replace windshield wiper blades, etc.
- May map routes, itineraries, and points of call for other drivers as well as yourself.
- Supervise the loading and unloading of passengers and personal property onto the bus.
- Post manifests, inventories, and other records of goods and passengers transported. This would include the compiling of count sheets from all drivers when assigned.

Special Notes: These are full time and part time, temporary positions, 20 - 40 hours per week, days and shifts vary. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. FLSA non-exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference. Night and weekend work is required. These positions are for nine months only - commencing immediately and ending May 26, 2011.
Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such are required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are cancelled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
