Director of Physics Teaching Laboratories

The Director of Physics Teaching Laboratories position is responsible for creating, developing, and implementing the curriculum for the department s teaching laboratories. The position is responsible for all aspects of the laboratories, which includes ordering necessary supplies and equipment, working with faculty to design laboratory exercises that enhance the lecture class session, authoring laboratory manuals, and training teaching assistants. The Director will also be the chief safety officer for all laboratory activities.
Educational Requirements:
Bachelors degree in physics or related discipline, three years of college laboratory teaching, and substantial previous experience in laboratory management and/or curriculum development required;
Minimum Requirements:
Must have extensive experience and knowledge of experimental methods and design. Must have technical skills with equipment and tools of experimental physics, including but not limited to computer data acquisition, optics, electronics, and basic woodworking and metalworking. Individual must have knowledge of Physics laboratory experiments. This involves the ability to gauge the complexity of experiments while ensuring safety measures are met, in order to guarantee the students successful learning experience.
Preferred Requirements:
Masters degree in physics or related discipline and three years of college laboratory teaching experience preferred.
Additional Information:
This position supervises 10-16 laboratory sections for introductory physics courses each semester, typically enrolling between 150 and 200 students. Each lab section typically has one instructor and one student teaching assistant, with a typical total of four instructors and five students. Additionally, the position provides demonstration support for five courses per semester, and equipment support for one intermediate or upper-level course per semester. The lab budget derives from the lab fees of $75/student/course, support equipment purchases and teaching assistants, and amounts to about $10,000 per semester.
