Dean of the College of Engineering
THE POSITION
California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona), invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Engineering. The Dean provides academic leadership for faculty, staff, and students in the college, as well as being responsible for fiscal and personnel management, support for faculty and staff development, and strategic planning. This position reports to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs, represents the College on the Academic Deans Council, and administers a large and complex organization.
The mission of the College of Engineering is to educate engineers and technologists to meet increasingly complex technical and socioeconomic challenges. The Dean is expected to lead strategic planning for the college and its programs at a comprehensive polytechnic university, based on a dynamic vision for the future of engineering education and applied research, while also respecting budget and resource limitations. To move the College forward, the Dean must inspire support among its internal and external stakeholders and facilitate partnerships with a variety of institutions and industries locally, nationally and internationally. Applicants whose work incorporates a global perspective and a demonstrated commitment to diversity in higher education are particularly encouraged to apply.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated commitment to the philosophy that the practical application of theory is essential to learning;
A strong record of professional accomplishment;
A PhD degree or extensive management and research experience in a field of engineering;
Eligibility for appointment to the rank of tenured full professor in a department of the College of Engineering;
At least five years of responsible academic or senior industry administration;
Service as a faculty member in an engineering program at a comprehensive or research university, or equivalent industry experience;
An understanding of the primary fields of, and current trends in, engineering;
Awareness of expectations for recruitment, tenure, and promotion in a college of engineering;
Ability to communicate effectively in a culturally and ethnically diverse community; and
Demonstrated capacity for organizational leadership and team building.

THE COLLEGE
The College of Engineering has the largest engineering program in California, granting approximately 800 degrees annually, and one of the largest Civil Engineering programs in the country. The college enrolls approximately 5,400 undergraduates and Master s students in 7 departments, with 11 ABET accredited programs. The college is ranked 15th nationally among non-doctoral engineering programs by U S News and World Report.
THE UNIVERSITY
Cal Poly Pomona is an Hispanic Serving Institution, one of two polytechnic universities in the state of California, and one of only seven such institutions nationally. It is a member of the 23-campus California State University, serving the needs of a culturally diverse community 35 miles east of Los Angeles in one of the most dynamic economic and cultural, yet affordable, regions of the country. The university is noted for its scenic and historic 1,400-acre campus, once the winter ranch of cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg, located within an hour's drive of beaches, mountains and desert. The ethnically diverse student population of about 19,000 students is enrolled in 62 baccalaureate and 19 master's degree programs with approximately 1,100 tenure track and adjunct faculty. APPOINTMENT DATE/SALARY: The University seeks to fill this position by summer, 2011, or earlier. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position includes a very attractive benefits package.
