Description:
Humboldt State University’s Department of Critical Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in Comparative Ethnic Studies with an emphasis in African American Studies.
Rank and Salary:
We seek to fill this position at the Assistant Professor level; however, rank and salary are dependent upon the appointee’s qualifications and experience. The current California State University Salary Structure is available at: http://www.humboldt.edu/aps/docs/Salary-Schedule.xls.
Professional Qualifications:
A Ph.D. or equivalent in Ethnic Studies or related field from an accredited college or university is preferred at the time of appointment. ABDs with considerable progress towards degree completion by appointment date will be considered. Completion of the terminal degree is required prior to the start of the subsequent probationary year following initial appointment. Equivalency to a Ph.D. can be established through evidence that the candidate has achieved regional or national status of outstanding prominence in their disciplines or areas of instruction. Such evidence consists, in part, of publications, exhibits, performances, professional lectures, the holding of major office in professional organizations, and the like, which supports the claim of regional or national prominence.
The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:
• Potential for or record of research, scholarly and/or creative activity involving students whenever possible;
• Potential for effective teaching or teaching experience using a variety of methodologies;
• Ability and/or interest in teaching a broad range of courses to diverse students;
• Ability and/or interest in preparing individuals to function in a culturally and ethnically diverse society.
The candidate must be broadly trained in comparative Ethnic Studies, as well as be able to place an analysis of the intersections of race, sexuality, class, gender, and nationality at the center of her/his scholarship and teaching. In addition, the candidate should be prepared to offer two courses per year in African American Studies as part of the CRGS curriculum. Additional desirable qualifications may include one or more of the following specializations: Critical Race Studies, American Studies, Diaspora Studies, Cultural Studies, Subaltern Studies, Multicultural Queer Studies, Feminist Studies, or Postcolonial Studies. We seek a candidate with a strong interest in program and curricular development, and a commitment to undergraduate teaching and advising.
Evidence of degree(s) is required at time of hire. The successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States.
Professional Duties:
Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence and to building a strong research record. Responsibilities include teaching in both the lower and upper division, including: Introduction to US Ethnic Studies; Introduction to African American Studies; Power and Privilege: Gender, Race, Sex and Class; Multicultural Perspectives in American Society; Hip Hop and the Black Experience, Migrations and Mosaics; Theory and Methods, as well as the ability to teach specialized courses from our curriculum and to develop new courses. Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students.
The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are teaching, research, scholarship, creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.
General Information:
Critical Race, Gender and Sexuality Studies at HSU offers an interdisciplinary studies major with concentrations in Ethnic Studies, Women’s Studies, and Multicultural Queer Studies. We also offer minors in the concentration areas. We are undergoing a period of development as we work on both curricular and extra curricular efforts to disseminate the goals of Critical Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.
Humboldt State University is part of the 23-campus California State University system.
