One of America s leading liberal arts colleges, Haverford is a close-knit, non-sectarian intellectual community located on a beautiful campus just outside Philadelphia. Founded in 1833 by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), the College promotes student development in an environment that emphasizes individual dignity, academic rigor, critical engagement with society, and mutual respect. Haverford has evolved into a college with both an expansive academic program and a vibrant scholarly community. Today, with over 130 faculty members and a coeducational student body, Haverford enrolls nearly 1,200 students each year representing a wide geographic area and diverse backgrounds.
The Librarian of the College is the chief administrator of the Haverford College Libraries. This includes the James P. Magill Library, which houses the internationally important Quaker and Special Collections; the Gilbert F. White Science Library; the Observatory Library; and the Union Music Library. Reporting to the Provost and working closely with the Chief Information Officer, the Librarian of the College will oversee a talented and well-respected staff of 24 FTE, and bring creativity and vision to the Library in support of the ambitious teaching, learning, and research activities of the College. Specific responsibilities include strategic planning, collection building, budgeting, development of services, personnel management, and collaboration with colleagues at nearby Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore Colleges.
Haverford s collections and services are enhanced by its partnerships with Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore Colleges in a nationally recognized Tri-College relationship. At the heart of this are shared physical and digital collections that are comparable in size and quality to those of a research university. The Librarian should have experience working with consortia, and an appreciation for the opportunities presented by such alliances. The Librarian will be an advocate and spokesperson for the Library on campus, within the Tri-College and other consortial relationships, and in the larger library community. Haverford College is poised to invest significant resources towards enhancing the physical structure of the library. The Librarian will need the strategic vision and leadership skills to help direct this important transformation of library structure and services.
Haverford College seeks an accomplished professional with significant administrative experience in an academic library to provide leadership for a strong program that combines traditional functions and information technologies. This individual must possess knowledge of emerging technologies and an understanding of their impact on library services. The successful candidate will understand faculty and student cultures, possess extensive knowledge of academic libraries, and exert the vision and resources to establish the Library as the intellectual center of campus. The Librarian must have outstanding interpersonal skills, superior oral and written communication skills, and a strong record of scholarly and professional achievement. The ideal candidate will have substantial library management experience with evidence of leadership in library planning, fund raising, and assessment. A master s degree in library science or equivalent experience is required; an additional advanced degree is preferred.
