2010 Fall/ 2011 Spring Graduate Assistant

Job Description: As a paraprofessional, provides adminstrative and strategic support for the goals and objectives of the Career Center. Provides one-on-one and group career-related advising and training to students and alumni. Represents the Career Center at university-sponsored events and assists in the planning and coordination of special events, activities, and programs. Facilitates and maintains communication between the Career Center, faculty, and students of an assigned academic college.

RESPONSIBILITIES
?Conduct one-on-one career advising sessions with students that may include but are not limited to resume writing/critiques, interview preparation, job & internship search strategies, cover letters, correspondence, and general inquiries.
?Conduct career-related training workshops for student organizations and select undergraduate courses. Evaluate program content and maintain evaluation documentation.
?Facilitate and maintain communication with students and faculty of an assigned college. Disseminate information regarding job openings, internships, service updates, and event notifications. Address student, faculty, and alumni questions and emails.
?Assist Career Center staff in coordination and execution of special events and programs such as career fairs, employer information sessions, on campus interviews, and mock interview training.
?Represent Career Center and assigned academic college at university sponsored and campus-wide events.
?Maintain internal job recruitment database and faculty/student distribution lists for assigned academic college.
?Assist in development and distribution of promotional materials, and career tools including but not limited to fliers, CD-ROMs, newsletters, and general electronic correspondence.
?Conduct research for student resources containing relevant career, job, and internship information.
?Coordinate and complete special projects.
?Attend and contribute to weekly staff meetings and in-house training sessions.
?Complete and effectively implement training received.
?Maintain documentation of student appointments and presentations.
?Provide general administrative support as needed.

All responsibilities are essential job functions.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
?Work under general supervision of Assistant/Associate Director for an assigned academic college.
?In daily communication with Assistant/Associate Director primarily through face-to-face interaction but also via email and phone when necessary. Purpose of interaction is to discuss current and future assignments, projects, events, and schedules.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
?Work is conducted from a desk within a shared office in area of responsibility.
?Frequently in contact with others including but not limited to fellow graduate assistants, Assistant/Associate directors, recruiters, employers, students, faculty, alumni, and outside vendors.
?Small percentage of job is performed out of office in alternate locations such as campus classrooms, residence halls, meeting facilities, administrative buildings, and academic buildings. Purpose of work in these locations includes but is not limited to career training workshops, classroom presentations, career fairs, employer information sessions, and university sponsored events.


Minimum Qualifications: REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Srong knowledge of Microsoft Office XP software (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, Access and Publisher).
?Knowledge of Internet/online research applications and general communication technology (email, phone, fax, etc.).
?Excellent written and oral communication skills.
?Strong interpersonal skills.
?Ability to manage multiple projects and timelines.
?Superior organizational skills.
?Ability to speak publicly and conduct group presentations.
?Ability to work effectively within teams.

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
?Bachelor's degree and at least 1 year of work experience; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS
?Must be an accepted graduate degree-seeking student and be enrolled in 6 credit hours per fall and spring semester (9 for Doctoral students) to qualify.
?Must maintain good academic (3.0) and judicial standing with the university at time of contract start date and throughout employment period.

PHYSICIAL REQUIREMENTS
?Position requires a significant amount of writing and keyboarding involving repetitive motions with fingers and sitting for prolonged periods of time.
?Position frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to manipulate, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
?Position requires extensive use of telephone and face-to-face communications, which requires the accurate perception of speech.
?Position is regularly required to talk and hear.
?Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
?Occasional domestic (campus) travel required.
