RESEARCH ASSOCIATE

Job Description: The overall duties of this position are in the management and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data related to assessment of student learning, management processes, and university strategic directions. The position is responsible for providing data analysis, report generation, and other analysis of assessment processes and outcomes that provide a basis for effective institutional planning and strategic management. The Associate is responsible for working with faculty and staff in academic units and student affairs in a comprehensive plan of unit assessments of student learning as well as with administrative units. ECU is developing an assessment plan that is part of an ongoing university planning and evaluation process. Our commitment and capacity for effective assessment figures more prominently than ever to our accreditation relationship. Accrediting agencies have shifted away from measuring resources to judging the quality of student learning based on documented processes and outcomes. To support this shift, this position is involved in translating data into usable information for the university community and working to document the alignment between our stated mission, purposes, and objectives and the actual outcomes of our programs and activities.
This position provides collaboration in the use of current and the development of new data bases and applications that provide effective and efficient data analyses and report delivery using a variety of data sources. Among these data sources and tools are data warehousing, data mining, and business intelligence technologies. During the database development and enhancement process, the individual in this position will be responsible for translating unit assessment needs into data elements and structures that are responsive to one-time and longitudinal study requirements. This position works closely with university assessment associates in analyzing student learning outcome data as well as assimilating static reporting formats into an interactive process utilizing dashboards and drill downs with a focus on student learning and institutional planning.
The Associate reports to the Director of Institutional Assessment (IPAR) with an understanding of direct responsibility for assignments and support to the assessment and planning functions in the Office of Institutional Planning, Assessment and Research. The Associate may serve as a member of institutional and divisional committees, task forces, and councils.
The utmost accuracy is required. Crucial decisions and planning strategies depend on the data provided by units related to student learning. General instructions are provided to the associate as needed with guidelines and parameters provided as necessary for individual projects.
The Associate works independently to design, conduct, and report finding s of analytical studies to appropriate organizational units.
This position requires:
Strong management and strong interpersonal skills;
An ability to collaborate and implement assessment strategies require strong negotiation and decision-making skills;
An ability to prepare detailed and comprehensive reports and to present data and information clearly and concisely in both oral and written form;
An ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within the office and the university community;
Extensive experience with a variety of computer software including Microsoft WORD, use of presentation graphics such as Microsoft POWERPOINT, EXCEL, and ACCESS. Working knowledge of statistical analysis programs such as SPSS or SAS including experience with analytical procedures used in educational settings. Knowledge and experience with business intelligence software preferred.


Minimum Qualifications: The qualified candidate must hold a minimum of a Master's degree in social or behavioral sciences, education, or other relevant area from an appropriately accredited institution. Strong interpersonal qualifications and experience working directly with faculty in educational program design and assessment are highly desirable. The ability to interact with faculty and administrators in all divisions is important. Well-developed skills in written and interpersonal communications are essential.
At least 5 years of relevant experience in a higher education or professional school management is preferred. The relevant experience includes (1) assessment of student learning (2) academic program design, (3) project management and assessment; (4) and accreditation processes and requirements. The position demands solid organizational skills, demonstrable knowledge of curriculum development and assessment strategies; excellent oral and written communication skills; the ability to work independently, attend to multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
